My husband & I are coming to Costa Rica for 3 glorious weeks this March. I’ve been saying for years I’d like to live as permanently as we can in CR. We both still have to work for at least 4 more years (son just about to start college so financial & parental concerns). This trip coming up, we plan to try working while playing. We’re both self-employed US lawyers so I’m thinking we can still conduct business while away; of course court appearances won’t be possible. We’ll be staying in the Playa Naranjo area, as I think we’d enjoy the pacific side best, but am not sure. We don’t want to waste a realtor’s time when we know we are not ready to buy, but need to see & feel the different areas of CR & find out what options are available. We’ve been to CR only twice before (short visits), so we know navigating the country can be challenging. Our Spanish is still being worked on as well. Suggestions?

Rent a vehicle and tour the country, on your own schedule.January 25, 2012 at 4:22 pm #159456AndrewKeymaster1. Thank you so much for being so respectful and considering the time of a professional Realtor… That’s refreshing.
2. You will likely have a great time visiting and touring around yourselves however, most Realtors in Costa Rica understand that the sales cycles can be a long one so if you find one you think you like, why not be completely honest with them – let them know it could be 4/5 years before you buy – and give them an opportunity to help…
The worst that can happen is that they will say: “Please call us back when you’re ready to buy…”
Good luck!

We are in the process of buying land in Aguacate, just outside of Nuevo Arnenal on Lake Arenal. We have been going to CR for 4 years now and, while it will be many years before we can retire, we wanted to buy land while their economy was in the same state as ours.
Prices have come down and I am sure they will go back up as the years go by. We have driven from the north to the tip of the Osa.
I would suggest you rent a car and drive and drive and drive. Stay a couple of nights at each place and get a feel. Something might strike your fancy and then you can go back and stay longer.
Go back a few times to see if you like it as much. Things to consider are proximity to a city, climate, American community, infrastructure, etc.
We originally wanted to be near the beach but decided against it once we heard about the extreme heat as well as the huge expense for a/c year round.
There is much to consider and you’ll get a better feel the more you visit.
And, yes, we are buying land without ever renting in CR first… it just felt so right and we have met many people on our travels.
