We’re shopping for a home to purchase. (Atenas, Grecia, San Ramon if you know of anybody – we scour the web, so don’t send us links please.)
We’re thinking 3 BR: 1 for us, 1 for them, 1 for “other.” But wonder if after the first year or so, will the friends and family keep coming? Might be cheaper to go with a smaller house and just “make do” when company comes? For those who have lived in CR for a while, in your experience, do the visitors ever stop?

If you live in the countryside, the visitors will be less.
At least, this is what we have found, after 10+ years.February 3, 2011 at 9:22 pm #203723goinglikesixtyParticipant
Rent
We will be buying. I really don’t want a discussion on the rent vs. buy. We’re not going to buy at the beach (unless they have moved Atenas, Grecia, San Ramon.) Thanks for your response.
Can you define “countryside?” you mean anyplace away from the beaches? or away from civilization?February 3, 2011 at 9:23 pm #203724AndrewKeymasterWhen I lived in Grand Cayman I bought a large home because it had a separate apartment on the ground floor which I thought would be ideal for my parents and other visitors…
It meant quite a bit more money plus increased maintenance costs (when I lived there I paid US$400 per month just for water and about $300 per month for cell phone and the same for electricity – it ain’t a cheap place).
Regular costs are a lot cheaper in Costa Rica so if you’re comfortable with the idea of investing a significant amount of money for additional bedrooms for guests then go ahead but, I think you’ll find that in the long run, it would be cheaper for you to put them up in a local B&B/hotel…

Since Atenas, Grecia, San Ramon are all very different climates you have different things to offer your visitors.
We live away from civilization, I guess….according to some.February 3, 2011 at 10:03 pm #203726goinglikesixtyParticipantThanks Scott. It’s not like the guest bedroom would be unused are require more maintenance like your Grand Cayman deal, but still… if after, let’s say 3 years, the visitors stop, then spending money on B & B’s would be best option.

February 4, 2011 at 4:36 pm #203729costaricabillParticipantWe have been here (Playa Samara) going on 2 and a 1/2 years and they are still coming. The first year we had more “guest nights” than non. The second year it increased, and this year looks so far like another increase.
Yes, we are at the beach and we enjoy the climate here, and like us, 90% of our visitors (friends and family) are from either Florida or Texas, so they are used to “beach weather” as well. It gets much cooler here at night than during the summer months in either Tampa or Houston, so many of our guest actually think the weather here is “cooler than at home”.
Short answer – in our case, they keep coming!
For similar reference – listen to Jimmy Buffet’s song “Everybody’s Got A Cousin In Miami”February 4, 2011 at 4:57 pm #203730goinglikesixtyParticipant
February 4, 2011 at 6:03 pm #203731raggedjackMemberMaravilla, I happen to think it’s a great house. If it were 3 years into the future, I’d have to look at it!
February 4, 2011 at 8:07 pm #203732costaricafincaParticipantRaggedJack you are smart not to purchase property this far in advance. Lots of money involved in keeping it safe & secure.
Visit often…then choose.February 4, 2011 at 8:24 pm #203733maravillaMemberyou said you were looking for a house in the grecia/san ramon area and i merely mentioned that my neighbors’ house was for sale and since i live here, too, i can attest to the fact that the house is nice and is in a spectacular location, guests be damned.

What part of my original question does this address?
I believe Maravilla was refering to the first part of your post. There are a lot of very helpful people on this forum and you should take full advantage of it.
My neighbors in San Ramon are also selling a beautiful home with 180 degree views of the gulf of Nicoya. Good luck to you. 😆 -
