I just recently got back from Costa Rica;
I visited Domincal/Uvita, Jaco/Hermosa, and the Tamarindo areas. I was shocked by the level of residential development taking place (not acutally the building of homes yet) but the subdivision and sale of large tracts of land for residential use. Almost all of the developments I looked at touted themselves as eco-friendly. Although chopping up pristine chunks of land for luxury residential tracts is hardly an eco-friendly endevour. I am a realist and know that this is and will continue to happen as long as people want to live and buy property in Costa Rica. What I am interested in understanding is what is actually being done to make sure that the development taking place is as eco-friendly as possible. What regulations are in place in this country with respect to new development, environmental impact studies for projects and requirements for waste water treatment, etc.? Where is all the sewage going to go that is created from all this new development that is going on? Developers are making millions in costa rica right now and a portion of those profits should go to creating the infastrucutre required to support this development. The nations marketing machine touts itself as a eco-lovers paradise but is it doing what it takes to preserve this long-term?
