jdocop that’s a hefty bill, all right! Would it not be cheaper to use a dehumidifier?
I always suggest putting in closets, some small containers, with holes drilled in the lid and filled with non-clumping kitty litter….and this really works:D

The name is not Dugan…….no, I don’t live near the ocean. We live up in the mountains. CRF: yes, a dehumidifier would likely be less costly to operate, but someone gave us the air conditioner, and we put it into our container, so I figured I’d go ahead and have it installed. There are occasional days when it is hot enough here to be glad we have it, and I just figured the possibility of doing a little dehumidifying might make it worth while.

waggoner41 did you bring your gas dryer with you or did you purchase it here. If here, can you please post where one can be purchased.
Or anyone else, if you have the information.

We brought our gas dryer from the States.

However, a Tico friend with a huge knowledge of San Jose can probably tell you where to purchase one. He is due back here in about two hours. I will get the information for you then.

I see you are in Guanacaste. The largest city there, and your best bet, is Liberia. We have a Tico family living with us that provides us with information and they are our face in Costa Rica. They save us from paying “pricios Americano”.

Our experuiences are a story in itself but if you can find a Tico you can trust implicitly he/she will be worth their weight in gold.

waggoner41 we have lived in Costa Rica for 9 years and understand how a ‘Tico face’ can lower the price. The problem is not the price but finding a gas dryer. And we have many Tico friends who we trust.

Query your friends for a place more local than San Jose. We bought refrigerator Na Stove at a pawn shop. New items but that is where thay were in San Jose.

I understand where you mean, but back to my question, do you know where to purchase a gas dryer?
Anyone else have information, please?
Over the last couple of years, there have been a few mentions of the average cost of electric bills in Costa Rica. Members have posted figures that range from $35/month up to $500/month. It would be VERY helpful to those of us who are looking at real estate purchases/rentals if some of you who already live there would “chime in” with some figures. However, these estimates would only be helpful if you would also state what appliances and usage comprise those numbers AND the general size of your home. This is the sort of detailed information that I’m sure many of us would greatly appreciate! Thanks!
Also the rate per KWH would be helpful and if the charges based on a tiered system. In California we are on a progressive rate scale, starting at 11 cents a Kwh and graduating up to 45 cents a Kwh. The more you use the higher the rate you pay.

CRF: fwiw, we gave up on the idea of a gas dryer, after all the hassles with our gas stove. Just about anyone will offer to special order a gas dryer for you, but at a premium. Then, you have the problem of converting the system to use LPG, instead of natural gas, plus running a proper/safe line to the dryer itself, and finding a distributor willing to provide you with (again, at a premium) gas tanks of a large enough size to make it worth your while.

I don’t know what the Kwh rate is here, but I do know that the charge goes up the more you use. Also, I know that many folks here (Ticos and expats alike) go around this by installing two separate meters; when one reaches the threshold, they shut down that circuit, and switch to the other. Ultimately, electricity is only slightly less here compared to the states, at least in our case.

Very informative information. Pursuant to our recent property purchase, the information provided helps me to calculate our potential power usage and costs. Another member mentioned the costs for power would be rising soon, any ideas how much? Would anyone else recommend the two meter system previously mentioned by another member?

jdocop thanks for your input. We have had no problems with gas stoves and eventually found 4 larger tanks for sale, privately, which are also used for a hot water tank. The dryer is for friends who are building a few houses and would prefer gas, but we understand the safety concerns.
