I asked this question one time before but never really got an answer to it. So i will be more detailed.
I have a vehicle that i intend on bringing to CR when i build my house. It does not have a cadilidic converter. Is their an emission program in place that would demand this. Thanks.
November 10, 2009 at 3:54 pm #202149costaricafincaParticipantIt will depend on the age/year of your vehicle.
If it was built with a cadilidic converter, and has now been removed for some reason, it must have one in place to pass inspections here.November 10, 2009 at 4:00 pm #202150AndrewKeymasterI’m certainly no genius with the mechanics of cars but I think what we’re referring to here is a catalytic converter rather than something that sounds like it comes from a Cadillac, no?
“A catalytic converter (colloquially, “cat” or “catcon”) is a device used to reduce the toxicity of emissions from an internal combustion engine. First widely introduced on series-production automobiles in the U.S. market for the 1975 model year to comply with tightening EPA regulations on auto exhaust, catalytic converters are still most commonly used in motor vehicle exhaust systems.”

How do you know if your car has one anyway? Anybody know?

Scott, for not being to mechanically inclined, you sure sounded like Cliff Clavin on that one 🙂Yes the truck came with one and was removed when i rebuilt my exhaust last year when no emissions standards were required in CO.

November 10, 2009 at 7:37 pm #202155DavidCMurrayParticipantI’m be surprised to learn that Colorado permits the removal of catalytic convverters or other emission control devices from cars. I’d be surprised that the EPA would permit it. That said, however, I think that your truck will have to pass Costa Rica’s emissions test to be titled and licensed. A cursory examination of the underside of the vehicle will disclose the presence or absence of the converter and the electronic sniffer in the tailpipe will surely disclose the nature of what’s being emitted.
By the way, you’ll also have to pass the emissions test when you take your truck to the annual or bienniel RTieve(sp?) inspection.
November 11, 2009 at 11:19 pm #202156kimballMemberWe had emissions for years and then a few years back they just stopped the emissions testing. That was about when my exhaust went bad in my 1 ton. So i just manufactured my own and tossed the cats. Next year CO. will be bringing back E testing. Go figure. Looks like ill be crawling around under my truck again.
November 12, 2009 at 12:23 pm #202157DavidCMurrayParticipantInteresting, kimball. Does Colorado have periodic safety inspections for vehicles? If yes, I’d be surprised to learn that you could pass that with a missing catalytic converter.
I hope you kept the original one as these things are not cheap to replace.
November 12, 2009 at 5:47 pm #202158VersatileMemberIRRC Any vehicle after 1974 has a converter. Even though your state doesn’t test emissions your are required by Federal law to have one. It is a felony to remove it.
That would be any gasoline fueled vehicle.
November 13, 2009 at 12:46 am #202159kimballMemberNo, we do not have safety inspections like i had in NY. Just emissions.
All this emission testing is is BS anyway. Just another way for big bro to get in my pocket.
November 13, 2009 at 1:39 am #202160DavidCMurrayParticipantUnless, of course, your metabolism is based upon breathing air.
Why don’t you pipe your truck’s exhaust through the cab and clean up the emissions with your lungs thereby saving the rest of us the associated disease, disability and premature death?
November 13, 2009 at 3:58 am #202161kimballMemberDave, do you eat beef?
November 13, 2009 at 4:08 am #202162ChariotdriverMemberHere is a pic of one.
A catalytic converter will be placed “in line” in the exhaust system and should have flanges on both ends so that it can be replaced when it fails or stops working.
Here is a link to a pic of one, and most will look similar.http://www.insidesocal.com/crime&courts/catalyticcoverter_01.jpg
