Allow me to add to the list of incompetent car rental agencies within Costa Rica. I have just returned from CR after spending 2 weeks over Xmas and New Years.
As this was our first visit we wanted to experience as much of the country as we could within our limited time frame. So we spent the first week in Tamarindo and had planned to take our rental 4×4 down the Pacific coast to our accommodations outside Dominical in the Southern zone.
On arrival in Tamarindo I went to the Europcar rental office in town a few days before January 1st to confirm that they had my booking online for that date. After reading some of the horror stories on this forum I thought this would be prudent.
They confirmed my reservation (placed in September). So all was well, or so I thought. On the day when we had already checked out and went to the office to pick up our vehicle we were informed that the rental company (Europcar) had canceled our reservation and the young woman produced the fax that informed her of that.
You can imagine our surprise. Here is a supposedly legitimate rental company that I have used in Europe before and this is the way they handle their business.
You can imagine our reaction to this news. We were supposed to be in Dominical at a specific time and had booked our accommodation accordingly. I asked the distressed young woman in the office (who was as upset as we were because she had no other cars available)how this could be??
She said something about too many in for repairs and too busy at that time of year. This is an order I placed in September?? Just to make a long and stressful story short. After some phone calls and visits to other rental companies we lucked out when a woman at Alamo had to upgrade and we got the 4×4 she had originally reserved.
We managed to get on our way the same day. No thanks to Europcar who offered nothing in terms of customer service. Suffice to say we will never use them again.
This and other misadventures did not take away from our experience with Pura Vida. We have fallen in love with the country and we are looking at some property that we hope to acquire if all the logistics can be worked out.
Cheers
