Can you imagine the chaos and anger that will be generated at the fronteras over the next month and the accompanying holiday period? Another tax, but with limited places throughout the country to make payment and absolutely no place to pay at the border!
I think I don’t want to be a border guard, especially at Penas Blancas. There will be thousands of angry Nicas trying to get home for the holidays!!!
November 27, 2013 at 4:27 pm #171497AndrewKeymasterAnother wonderful example of how our moronic politicians (for me that’s a global truism and not just applicable to Costa Rica) act on something without considering the real life consequences…
November 27, 2013 at 4:49 pm #171498daviddMemberCosta Rica is the most expensive country in central america
anyone want to dispute this??? would love to hear the opposite
problem is nothing changes here except at a private level
where in gods name is all that money????
if Ortega had some Savvy he could make his country into the place to be. I have friends that live in grenada that say its the same as escazu at half price.

what is the amount of the new border tax? and is it at the airport as well when leaving?
November 27, 2013 at 10:11 pm #171500guruMemberThe land crossing tax (stated in the quoted article) is about $5.
For the last decades or more there has been an exit tax at the airport that could be paid in cash only. It is roughly $20-$24. You may be able to pay it by credit card now but it used to be cash. So you had to be careful NOT to be broke when you got to the airport. . .
I managed to get home one time from a business trip with less than a dollar in my pocket – not even enough to make a phone call. The parking fee to get my car out of long term parking was $25. The woman at the booth didn’t even want to hold my driver’s license while I went to get cash. . . It was an embarrassing day. But missing my flight from a foreign port would be much worse.

Scott hit the nail on the head with his comment about “moronic politicians”. They exist everywhere and it’s just as bad in the States.
Sooner or later there are going to be enough expats in Nicaragua for them to start doing the same things to fill their pockets.

http://insidecostarica.com/2013/12/03/new-border-tax-causing-chaos-nicaragua-border/December 3, 2013 at 9:34 pm #171504costaricafincaParticipantThis was on another forum today.
‘The new tax that went in to effect Monday morning, because off all the problems, was suspended Monday night. And after a conversation with a migration agent, she confirmed that it will not be put back into effect until they work out the kinks. Then it will be in La Gaceta, as to when it will go into effect. And after some prodding, Danelia assured me that they will post it on their FaceBook page.
If you are traveling on Tica Bus, for example, they are in the loop and you can pay the tax at the terminal, when the tax is put back into effect. If you are traveling on your own, call Migration at 9000-767266. It is a toll call, but while my conversation took a while, as she check with supervisors, it was worth the wait. If you do call, I suggest you ask the name and note the person in which you speak.
Remember, it is not just the tax it is also $2 per bag.’
