I live in the US and want to move to Costa Rica. We have a young family and would like to hear some ideas on where to live. (wants/needs) Land, house, cool temps, not further than 1hr to hospital, safe, low cost of living, other english speeking young familys. Any help would be great.

Hi Donnie and family! Have you visited Costa Rica yet? Visiting for at least two weeks or more is of great benefit. Also, if you will read through ALL of the postings in this discussion forum it will probably be of great benefit to you. I believe there is over 400 postings (?).

We have found this discussion forum to be extremely helpful.

Best Wishes to you and your family.

I would strongly recommend you and your wife invest $1,000 in George Lundquist’s four-day tour of the Central Valley which is designed for folks who are thinking of moving here. George will show you a variety of environments, community amenities, etc, and he’s a wealth of knowledge you can tap in the tour bus. I’m away from home and don’t have his website address, but it is elsewhere in this forum. Or you can do a Google search on “George Lundquist” and probably find it.

    I should have asked . . .

Do you have a plan for how to support yourselves? It may be a bigger challenge than you think.

I agree with David. Remember the pay is not what you are used to in the states and to get a job legally you have to have permanant residency (unless you have a corporation and you can get paid from that). Just a thought. These are all things I’ve thought about before making the decision to move this year. Also, where you want to live depends on what you are looking for? Good luck to you!

How we are going to support ourselves was not a question I asked. Thanks I have that covered. Now back to my questions. Young familys etc.

The questions you did ask are almost impossible to answer as there are pockets of people just like yourselves everywhere, it depends on what you are looking for. The highlands of the Central Valley are obviously cooler than the coastal areas. In the nicer suburbs of San Jose there are good bi-lingual schools for your children. Costa Rica is a varied country; nobody could possibly tell you where to live. That is a decision you must make depending on your family’s needs. The area around San Ramon has good hospitals, doctors, etc. and I’ve heard there is a really good bi-lingual school there too. It’s also cooler in San Ramon than other places farther down valley. Beyond that, I have no other information to give you except to suggest that you come on a fact-finding mission and see for yourself. If you have your financial needs met, have you also looked into the requirements for residency, which will be essential if you are moving there with children.
