Do you think that it is safer to live in a gated community?
Do you need security system or iron bars on windows, doors
if you live in a gated community?

I think John is right. Most of the published accounts of home invasions seem to happen in supposedly secure gated communities. Of course, that’s where many of the most affluent people live, so they’re the most lucrative targets.

I can’t see living in a gated community either. If I wanted to live behind high walls with concertina wire, armed guards and guard dogs, I’d go back to the U.S. and commit a felony. It’s cheaper and most of the nearby neighbors speak English.

I live in a gated community and it has been very safe. Not all gated communities are equal. We don’t have bars nor barbed/razor wire. We do have armed guards.

Many gated communities / townhouse communities only have a single guard which can be easily overcome. Also our access is limited via a 400 meter road which increases the risk to fleeing would-be robbers as they only have one means of escape. It’s not an attractive target in comparision to others.

Like a number of my neighbors we also have security systems.

I know most people here knock the gated community, but it works great for my lifestyle and my piece of mind. Not everyone can live on a remote mountaintop or finca.

You`d better worry about merry neighbors.Which sometimes not safe for your brain functions.

I agree that all gated communities are not the same. Ours literally just has a gated entry. The rest is paver roads, lighted streets and 1+acre lots with wonderful views. There is also just one way in and out, not the easiest place to rob.

Thank yu all for your opinions. We are in a process of completing the house constraction in a gated community with one entrance and one (the same) exit, 2 kids playgrounds, pool, rancho…
Subdivision is surrounded by concrete wall, 1 guard is at the entrance, 2 nd is on a motocycle, driving around 24 X 7. Nobody has iron bars or security systems.
We really do not know how soon we will be able to move to Cr.
So, we think that in gated community our house will be safer then in a bushes… Also we have cable, electricity, water, phone lines…all provided by municipality, so we can move in anytime. It is a middle class and higher income Tico’s neighbourhood. No gringos in our community as far as we know.
So far, we feel it is the best thing we could get. We are near Hacienda Los Reyes Contry Club, so we can use their Olympic pool, gym, golf, Tennis courts, pollo court just for $65.00 a month for a family. We are paying $115 for each person health club membership now.
We also only 3km from New Tallroad Exit.
Local people think it is a very safe neighbourhood.???
Walking ( 1km) distance to fruteria, meat, bakery shops.
Fantastic mountain view!!!We love it and can’t wait to be back to CR.

It sounds crazy to me….moving away from your country with concerns about safety so that you end up living behind a wall with a xenophobic mistrust and armed guards segregating you from the larger society and culture. Besides the pretty scenery and somewhat less expensive cost of living, what is it about Costa Rica that is left to enjoy once you cut out the people from the picture? Maybe gated communities are thought of as big cruise ships permanently docked from which day excursions can be safely made.

We are not crazy, we have been in CR 7 times so far. We greatly enjoy fresh, tasty, aromatic fruits, veggies, freshly cought fish, no need to buy bottlrd water and eat irradiated chemically altered garbage. No need for mood-altering drugs also.
Lovely scenery, best climate, friendly, peacefull people, ability to live in Central Valley on 40% of
what we spend in North America monthly, low taxes, ability to travel for less if you have ticos friends, ability to retire at 55 instead 100, no pressure, no rash, no need to impress your friends with a huge house, expensive cars, just to be yourself….The best part – great dental, health care for $40/month.
We chosen gated community because we trying to be safe in this paradise.

We live in gated community in North America also, because of REAL VIOLENT CRIME which is getting worse.

I don’t know if your view of the world is more valid than mine or not. Perhaps I am naive and foolhardy or perhaps you are paranoid and fearful. Perhaps it is just a matter of priorities; possessions are worth the segregation. All I know for sure is that the vast, vast majority of people do not find it necessary or perhaps even desirable to live behind walls in this country. I am casting my fate with the people here who decided a long time ago they didn’t need an army. Either this society is healthy and whole and safe to live within or it is diseased and dangerous and must be kept at a distance.

We are also planning to build in the next 2 yrs in the Orosi Valley area, all adjacent lots are 1-2 acres and many also sold.

We would prefer to construct our home without bars on doors and windows but understand that the reasons for security.

Guess we’ll have to address this issue carefully when the time comes.
