I am planing to travel to C.R. next month and wanted to know if a GPS can be used in Costa Rica, and if so is the signal any good.
I have a Garmin handheld GPS here. The satellite signals are just fine, but the built-in map is not very detailed. And the last time I checked, Garmin did not offer a downloadable map of Central America that provides any more detail.
I thought a GPS would be a great tool here, but especially without the detailed maps, it hasn’t proven useful. Mostly, I use the altimeter when looking at properties.
This company claims to have a detailed gps (garmin) map of C.R. but I have not used it nor do I know anyone who has. Also, when I was at the Best Western Irazu in San Jose I noticed the car rental company rents gps units with what they claim are detailed gps maps made for the C.R. market. There is a website somewhere where one can buy a gps with this map. *I do not know if this is on the up and up or not. I just bought a micro bus for my daughter and son-in-law for their business and decided against buying a gps and map for now, because he knows his way around pretty well. But I’d love to hear if anyone has this so called detailed gps map of C.R.

I have not tried this product and don’t know anyone who has
I’ve been curious about this topis as well. I’ve searched for a ‘western hemisphere’ or ‘latin america’ map with no success. i want one for a Garmin 76. The Garmin website has a “3rd Party …” section with a listing for a CR map that looks good and would have to be to meet Garmin standards. The place is called Centro GPS & Satellite; no web site but an e-mail address: sergio@rsaps.net
I’d like to know if anyone checks this out what you think of it.
