Our first visit is planned in November with others expected. Rather than renting a GPS from the car rental, I was wondering if someone could recommend maps that can be purchased and downloaded to a Garmin Nuvi.
I have seen two on internet searches GIS Data Systems looks somewhat crude in their screen shots. NAVSAT doesn’t really show their product on their site.
Has anyone good experience with one of these or perhaps another I have missed?
We purchased the NAVSAT program and loaded it on our Nuvi. Very easy to download. It even includes an additional POI (Points of Interest) program. They recently sent me a free upgrade. We found it to be extremely helpful. I would certainly recommend it.
I recently bought the Garmin Nuvi 765 and really like it. It’s easy to use, has good clear screens and you can easily download the CR map (for an extra fee).
Andrew,
Thanks for your reply. I just bought the 765t this week.
Which CR map are your referring to?
I don’t see one on the Garmin site.
NAVSAT sent me some more screen shots, and they even show dirt roads.
That looks like the way to go, unless you have another recommendation.
Thanks again,
John
John,
Navsat is about the only good option in which to buy the CR road map to download into your GPS. You can get the map here: http://www.navsatcr.com
After you purchase it, they will send you the download instructions. Keep in mind that you will only have a few days or so to download it after purchase and follow their instructions EXACTLY, including the information they’ll ask you for regarding your model name/number and product serial number. I found them to be quite good.
Good luck.
Andrew
I had experience with a Garmin while in CR and unfortunately, off the main roads it often suggested routes that weren’t really there. 😳
You can also download a Costa Rica GPS map here:

It’s absolutely free for personal use. The drawbacks: no support or guarantees.
We found the map to be very good. We use Magellan, so we had to convert it before uploading. For Garmin, you just upload it and you’re ready to go.
