I agree…outside of San Jose, it is pretty straightforward. There aren’t that many roads in the tiny country and sooner or later you end up at one ocean or the other,…or a dead end or a road that just turns into pure mud. And there are some signs for the towns and cities and parks. Tourists who are not totally helpless behind the wheel and who understand and speak some Spanish should be able to get by with just a good map.
December 26, 2010 at 2:44 pm #201597kloudermMemberFolks, I like the independent spirit of those who choose to rough it through SJO without a GPS…for those of us who are extremely compulsive and A++++ personalities, i would never leave home without my trusty gps with navsat CR map on it…..it gets me at least close to where i am going and without exploring back roads of CR, which i admit is fun to do when ones soul is in the exploring mode….limited time and a sense of urgency to “get there” make the gps a necessity for me…to each his own….merry christmas from georgia wishing i were in CR….kerry
December 26, 2010 at 4:11 pm #201598maravillaMemberi won’t drive with anyone who uses one of those navigational devices. they are too distracting and often not accurate at all. my husband rode with someone who had their garmin yakking all the time and it told him to make a turn in 200 meters, which he did, but he was going the wrong way on the pista near puntarenas. they were doing roadwork and rerouted one lane. of course, the garmin didn’t know that. my husband started screaming that he was driving in oncoming traffic and grabbed the garmin and threw it on the flor. learn your way around. most maps are pretty accurate. and if you get lost, so what?? that’s part of the adventure here. better than getting killed driving head-on into a truck!!

What navigation system works the best? Is it better to buy one in CR? What brand, where to buy it?
Garmin or Tom tom? How many rental cars have navigation system in it?
Thanks in advance…
Try: http://www.gpstravelmaps.com/costarica.php
Have a nice trip!!!
Good road signs! HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! CR does not have road signs other than the major highways and no addresses, so yes, I can read a paper map and have but like everyone said once off the main drag you are F&*^% without a GPS. Spend the freakin money and use common sense.
Alexander69,
Are you responding to the website link that I posted??? The link that I posted provided a GPS navigational software of Costa Rica for Garmin GPS devices…they had an update last Nov. 2010 that fixes the general navigation fixes throughout Costa Rica and added more roads. Since then, I had no problem so far…
Yes, I bought those “maps” and highway 27 wasn’t even on it. It looked like I was driving in air. Save the money. DON’T buy gpstravelmaps unless you have money to burn. Navsat or smartways is the way to go here in Costa Rica. Course, everyone has an opinion and I’ll finish by saying I am grateful that I knew where I was going that day.
