Well, we are now in 2007. First day of 364 until 2008 and we still blog. Let this be a stable and happy year if possible. And for all of you ex-pats CR congratulations. I still have 24 more months to move over there. It seems like inflation in USA is .05% a month but in CR it is close to 1.2%. Based on the purchasing power of both countries there is a disparity but prices in CR are starting to be in $$ not colones.
My wife is in CR visiting for the holidays and tells me that everything, everything in CR is getting more and more expensive. Taxi (forget about it) get the bus (periferico). Buying a home (rent) in a gated community. Shopping at the mall (save and come back to the USA) it is cheaper. Crime (on the up) somebody stole the christmas decorations inside the porch. They took a wire hanger and pulled the decorations from between the iron bars (they left the wire hanger).
Two houses down the lady came in her car after work and when she was opening the garage door to her house a man came with a gun and stole the car at gunpoint from her. He was waiting for her.
Everything changes and crime is one of them, they are getting bolder and bolder in San Jose and close to the American communities. Am I a voice of doom and gloom, NO. Just be ready for the unexpected, this also happen’s here in the USA.
Again, don’t be out looking for trouble anywhere in the World and trouble will not meet you. It happens everywere. I learn from past experiences and this is a reality of the world we live in either in the US or CR.
Feliz Navidad and see you in CR in 24 more months.
PS. I stll think CR is safer than any city in the US you just have to adapt to changes.
I would imagine the more foreign money there is in a particular area, the more expensive things will be. This is also true of any “tourist” area. I grew up in a medium town in the U.S. that relies on tourism. This meant it cost more to do everything.
In an area where people (local and other) know there is money, of course there will be more theft. Again, this is true everywhere.
Things like this can happen anywhere. The important thing is to be kind to those around you, keep an eye on your stuff and be smart.
I can’t wait to move to Costa Rica.
