I have recently been to Quepos and found it to be unbearable due to the heat and humidity. I have a land deal in the works and need to know soon if there is a beautiful place that is cooler in CR where there are shopping malls close by etc?
July 5, 2006 at 8:00 pm #177329wmaes47MemberMy expertise is very limited, but I know that I feel your pain.
Quepos, Dominical, Jaco, Hermosa… the list goes on for that type and style of climate.
You will find most of the Pacific coastal area in that condition, hot and unbearable. Stick around for the dry season, when there is no rain, the bugs bite, leaves fall off the trees to conserve moisture, the humidity is even higher and you can’t find a room with A/C. If you don’t like crowds and love a little solitude and don’t need a gated community, then…
If the coastal area is okay to visit and you don’t need to settle and live on the beach, and a view of the mountains and coast will work, then I would suggest that you find a place in the hills and mountains. Do a little exploring. I looked for such an area.
Driving and searching there was a nice little town with all the amenities I could want: shopping center, nice restaurants, hospitals, doctor and dentist care, movie theatre and a laid back ambiance.
There are areas WEST of this city that are off the beaten path, North and near the Autopista, relatively inexpensive, in an area with views of the surrounding mountains, Puntarenas, Nicoya Peninsula and Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Where an afternoon breeze teases the air and keeps the atmosphere with a pleasant humidity and the temperatures of 68F to 82F year round with an elevation between 2,000 and 4,000. Travel times to the airport of 45 minutes, coastal beaches of 45 minutes and 15-25 minutes to the center of the beautiful town and amenities, then…
Enough of the bull… Google: San Ramon in the Province of Alajuela.
Nice place and comfortable to me.

You can pick your own perfect climate here simply by adjusting the altitude

We have neither heat nor air conditioning and don’t need or want them. Our overnight lows are consistently in the low 60s; daytime highs in the mid- high-70s. It’s windy in January and February.
We’re 45 minutes from the Aeropuerto, an hour from downtown San Jose, Escazu, etc.
Compared to many other places, Grecia is clean and uncongested and the people have been universally warm and welcoming.
July 6, 2006 at 10:33 am #177332linlsd1MemberThanks for the prompt responses. Do you know of any housing or lot developers in these areas?
July 6, 2006 at 11:45 am #177333DavidCMurrayParticipantI could probably put you in touch with a real estate agent or two in the Grecia area. You can e-mail me at: daveandmarcia@racsa.co.cr.
July 6, 2006 at 12:30 pm #177334AndrewKeymasterThe very professional lady that I recommend for condos knows a few of the developers in the Grecia area, to reach her it would be best to visit and complete that little form at the bottm – Takes ten seconds
Let us know how you get on …

WeLoveCostaRica.comJuly 8, 2006 at 11:25 am #177335fhmorozMemberYes! I have been in Atenas since June 13 because passing through here on my way from the Central Pacific to San Jose last January I became enchanted. It’s very residential with a lot to offer in the way of shopping, services, etc., and best of all the climate is just about perfect. A gentleman who lives here and whom I trust implicitly is a contractor. He has 3 lots as we speak on which he will begin development in October. The location is excellent: all 3 lots have gorgeous views, privacy, and good size (about an acre each). I have selected the lower lot for my house which he is currently designing for me. He and his wife (my very good friend) will build their new house on one of the higher lots and he’ll be building another house on the other lot which he will sell. We will have our own road which ends at the lots so there will be no pass-thru, no construction trucks or that kind of noise passing by on a daily basis. Because the three houses and all the development will be done at the same time the entire cost for the project will be significantly less expensive. We expect to pay approx $200,000 for our 3 bedroom 2 bath house with garage, pool, and rancho. Possibly more if we add more amenities. Michel is French Canadian and speaks both English and Spanish. He is well-connected here and has built 6 homes already. I have rented 2 of them and of course have spent time in his current home as well. I recommend him very highly (and I’m a stickler!)
July 10, 2006 at 1:57 pm #177336linlsd1Memberfhmoroz, does the 200,000 include land etc? What is a rancho? Atenas sounds great to live in.
July 10, 2006 at 4:59 pm #177337fhmorozMemberYes, absolutely. A rancho is a small structure apart from the house with sliding screen doors and windows. In the US we would call it a screened porch only not attached to the house. Here in Atenas, where you don’t need air conditioning, your house is actually like living in a screened porch depending upon how many windows you would like it to have. I’m not sure I’ll be building one on my lot as I don’t know how much I would use it.
Atenas really is lovely. I drive down to the beach (Central Pacific) or I go to San Jose and other parts of the central valley whenever I want. They are both easy drives or bus rides.July 16, 2006 at 6:09 pm #177338linlsd1Memberfhmoroz, hi, do you have a good view there? Could you give me the owners’ name please or email? Thanks, linda
