guns guns guns…… does that give you the PURA VIDA – feeling ? Costa Rica, yes, sounds like paradise…..
December 15, 2008 at 12:30 am #193969ImxploringParticipantblackjackds… and you’re thinking is that the folks in CR are going to create better law enforcement and tougher penalties? Do you have some idea when that might happen so I can give up my guns and start leaving my door unlock? Perhaps when Elvis and Jack Kennedy reveal themselves and admit they’ve been living in Las Vegas under assumed names? Just give me a hint… will it be in my lifetime? NOW who’s the dreamer? LOL… Or perhaps a system like Singapore… but then again I’m not sure that a caning for spitting gum out on a sidewalk is the best answer either. And based on the current direction of the world overall you might want to rethink your ideas. CR will be impacted by the current world financial crisis. We’re already seeing that.
American correct, independent however… don’t find either party very appealing… but no lover of guns… just a realist… guns are a tool… and just as with any tool the outcome of it’s use is a function of those that chose to employ it. And please don’t fall for the Obama line about those God fearing folks in PA and their guns…. I’m guessing based on the demographics of the folks that voted for him so overwhelmingly by percentage, that there are MANY more that own and have used guns for less than honest pursuits… and are a lot less God fearing than the people in PA that he referred to! Just think about that for a moment.
As for the idea that gun ownership has some how been the cause of an increase in violent crime in America… I’d love to see the Democratic liberal source you’re referring to. The cause of that increase is social and domestic in nature… and the result of failed policy that rewards poor behavior, takes a band-aid approach to social issues that we now see are impacting the entire world! Social engineering that applies a mathematical approach to people will always be doomed to failure. All men may be created equal… but from that moment on… EVERYTHING changes!
Perhaps owning a gun is not for you… perhaps a tolerant attitude works for you. That’s great. But as the saying goes… a Democrat is just a Republican that hasn’t been mugged yet!
December 15, 2008 at 12:39 am #193970ImxploringParticipantblackjackds… You started this thread… and have one trip to CR under your belt… eyes full of stars… much like we all did after our first visit. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But take some time and do your homework as you have by joining Scott’s website. Reality will sink in… not in a bad way. We all love CR… for the good and the bad… and deal with both. It’s a learning curve that is shaped by your experiences.
Perhaps a trip to Limon will add to your education… be sure to wear your Rolex and flash plenty of cash around… perhaps even ask the Taxi driver to hook you up with some female company when you arrive… perhaps then return and give us your views on violent crime and defending yourself. I’d be very interested in your experiences then.
Pura Vida… be smart… stay safe.
December 15, 2008 at 1:02 am #193971blackjackdsMemberImxplorer…Did that republican comment sting or what because you evidently stopped paying attention to the main point of the comment. I did not say, expect, or have any idea if the CR cops will start cracking down on crime any time soon. I am saying that if they did, it would be a better answer to the problem than having guns. And I have no statistics to back my comment about guns and increased crime in america because of them but I do have some logic….Civilians allowed to have guns = criminals allowed to have guns= more violence….civillians not allowed to have guns = criminals not allowed to have guns = less violence. Maybe there is no better answer than “get a gun”, but like i said before its not like after all the civilians get guns the criminals are going to be like “well I guess our robbing days are over, lets go get a job app” they are going to say “well I guess we have to get guns now”
December 15, 2008 at 1:03 am #193972blackjackdsMemberwhy are all these threads closing? is this topic getting too long?
December 15, 2008 at 2:23 am #193973ImxploringParticipantblackjackds… We’d all like more police, less crime, an end to world hunger… the whole deal… but that’s not reality. Given the current situation… we can all only do what WE can to address the problem. No sting… just an observation about how each of us view security and safety. Each of us have our own exprience level… and do our best to learn from it.
December 22, 2008 at 8:28 am #193974munkyMemberWOW, In support……Just read all of this thread and must just say; what was it like in CR before North Americans (or western civilians) got there; they are certainly NOT gunslingers I think and do you think they robbed each other? I think not. If you want to bring your material possessions, live the way you are used to in CR, then defend it with fear walls, razor wire, and err guns then you are only making a new North Americian condition that will work much the say way as it does in errr NA; you are a magnet to be robbed, disrespected and err shot…… why not try and intergrate, speak Spanish and scale down your life stlyes to fit in or Share it!!!! Or here is another Idea, start investing in local communities and Tico infrastructures, training and education….. or go back to where you came from!
December 22, 2008 at 1:12 pm #193975SaraticaMemberMunky, do you live here? Would love to hear how your lifestyle is working for you. Please describe your scaled down “lifestyle to fit in” in detail. Does this include no hot water and no car? Are you talking middle class tico or wealthy tico? I hear remarks like yours often on the forums I read but no one ever really describes that lifestyle. I’d like a blow by blow, detailed instructions, see if I could hack it (probably not).
For this 53 year old freckle-faced gray-haired gringa, I’m afraid I will always look like a foreigner. Therefore rich and therefore a target. And I don’t want to live without hot water or without a car or without a dishwasher (two very hungry teens in the house)… sorry to disappoint but I like my lifestyle. We do volunteer work, my husband teaches English, we contribute. We have tico employees. Love my razor wire and my gun, my family, my dogs. And living in Costa Rica.
Ticos are the victims of theft, too. My maid was knocked down and robbed of her purse two weeks ago near her house. I know plenty of tico taxi drivers who carry a gun or pepper spray in the car, plenty who wear a gun on their hips. Weapons of self-defense are old as the hills. And a fact of life in the world we live in. Pura vida!
