Les Waggoner, you wrote, “David may have Medicare coverage but it will not cover him in Costa Rica and he still pays the Caja premium as we all do.”

My point was that having Medicare, TriCare, or any other non-CAJA insurance coverage has no bearing on the cost of enrolling in the CAJA. I’m well aware that Medicare affords no coverage whatsoever outside the U.S.

Sue, yes, Marcia and I pay a COMBINED monthly cost of $49US for enrollment in the CAJA. We’re members of ARCR who has a negotiated group enrollment rate with the CAJA. For those over 55, the monthly cost is $49. For those under 55, it’s higher — $75 per month, I think, but please don’t quote me.

For legal residents of Costa Rica, the annual membership in the ARCR is $50 for the first person and $10 for the second — $5.00 per month for us. For non-residents, it’s $100 per year plus $10.

We’ve met folks who have enrolled for an even lower monthly cost than the ARCR contractual rate. For one thing, they may or may not be declaring all their income. How is the CAJA to know? Then, the monthly rate is adjusted based in part upon your declared costs of living.

And finally, we know someone who simply said it was too expensive and the CAJA rep made him a better offer.

David, I’m confused about this percentage of income to pay for Caja. Donna & I declared our entire income yet our rate is just under 3.25%.

I’ve seen statements that declare that it is simply a percentage of income up to 13%. Does anyone really know how Caja charges?

Les, by all accounts it’s a black art. Everyone who is not enrolled under the ARCR contract seems to have a different story to tell about their CAJA enrollment cost. I sure don’t know.
