Does anyone have information on how to import a car from the US for personal use in CR? Is it allowed? I am going to be staying for 3 months or so, and don’t want to buy a car in CR. Would I be able to sell it in CR? Any information would be helpful
I ‘think’ that 3 months is the limit that you are allowed a foreign car in Costa Rica without going through the registration process but you will want to confirm that …
To sell it, the car will certainly have to be legally registered which means that you must pay all relevant import taxes etc…
A good site for a *guesstimate* for car importation taxes is the Ministro de Hacienda Car Tica website

You can find a few articles on this site about importing cars… And more information in the Discussion Forum.

You are correct, Scott. Upon entry into Costa Rica, you can obtain a three-month permit for the car, but that permit CANNOT be renewed. After 90 days, you must either take the car out of the country or begin the “nationalization” process.
And while you might find someone to give you some money in exchange for physical possession of the car, it could not be legally bought and sold until it has a legal Costa Rican title which would be the result of that nationalization process.
