I want to start off by saying I thoroughly enjoy this site ( its helps me escape the “western way of life” until Ive saved enough to escape to C.R for real) I wanted to thank everyone who has contributed , especially Scott the creator of course. Great job buddy, I look forward to all your newsletters and frequent your site quite often.
So here’s my question. I know legal employment is extremely rare in Costa Rica for a foreigner , But I was wondering if anyone here knew which job titles had a chance? I’ve tried searching online but can’t find any type of list. Forgive me if this is something that has been addressed already somewhere on here. In peticular I was wondering about a Power Engineer. As that’s my job title. I know the odds are slim , but it would jump up my escapre date significantly so it doesn’t hurt to ask. Thanks in advance for any help :D. Cheers ,
Dave
To work here, legally, a potential employer must apply on your behalf for a work visa, be able to work online, have Permanant residency status or married to a Costa Rican citizen.
You could open your own business, but legally you are not permitted to perform ‘physical’ work…and dealing with employees can be more difficult than you would imagine.
Being bi-lingual would definitely help.
You can also explore telecommuting – I own my own business that is US-based, but can run it from anywhere in the world as long as I have internet. Not sure that is something you can do with your line of work but if so, it will likely give you a much better income than what you’ll find in CR.

Well thanks for the tips guys. That’s pretty much what I figured. Just hoping there was a list out there of job titles that werent easily filled by Tico’s. And hoping power engineering was one. I’ll put some time into researching online based businesses.
