This is a forum on Costa Rica which seems primarily geared towards non Costa Ricans who either live here or plan to do so to just visit.

The forces behind emigration from any country are always worth studying and are almost always economic or political in nature.

It seems to me that many of us who are U.S. citizens have a common political theme which figures to some extent in our choice to leave the U.S.

Last night, Keith Olbermann delivered special commentary on our president. For me, it was not only a condemnation of Bush, but of an entire country which continually, out of fear, puts so much power into the hands of this kind of man. I wonder how strongly defended the people of Costa Rica are against the same fears.

Here is last night’s special commentary from Keith Olbermann.

Every single American needs to watch this video which hits home big time. We must wake up real soon or face the consequences or blowback of our murderous actions all over the world for the past couple hundred years…

How can we preach freedom and democracy when we have over 750 military bases outside the USA?

Bring our boys home now! And let’s focus on rebuilding what we’ve destroyed and that would include our own home – The UNITED States of America. There’s enough infrastructure that needs rebuilding in our own country to keep the Halliburtons busy for a long time.

Mr. Olbermann can certainly be a powerful speaker and it’s difficult to argue with what he says… And you have to admit that when GWB doesn’t have a script to go by he does not sound like an intelligent human being

Have you seen those articles – and this is no joke – about the changes in Bush possible being caused by pre-senile dementia (Dr Joseph M. Price, M.D. ) or maybe he’s back on the bottle? [ http://cartablanc.blogspot.com/2007/01/whats-matter-with-george-bush.html ]

And to look at the difference betwen how Bush talks now and how he talked ten years ago, take a look at at this short, truly frightening video [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw4Bhmm22xo&mode=related&search= ]

I am bothered by the fact that an entire nation would elect a man like Bush, whether afflicted with a disease, or not, TWO times to the office of president. I am further concerned that they will do it again by electing McCain. I do not understand my countrymen and I do not want to be a part of this circus any longer either.

wasn’t it a coup d’etat?? He stole the election, but that’s a whole other thread. I just spent 4 months in Costa Rica where I never saw a TV, heard the news of any kind, and never read the news on the internet. Now I’m back and all I see and hear is fear-based propaganda. It’s a weird reality here, that’s for sure, so I’ve turned off the TV altogether, and can’t wait to get back to Costa Rica where my big worries are whether or not my gardeners gallinas laid enough eggs that day and if my raw milk will be delivered.

Yup. Al Gore’s cousin, Gore Vidal, got it right in that piece from 5 years ago. The one thing I got from that article was Vidal’s belief that it is too late to do anything about changing the course of the United States. I agree with him. I think I’ll leave the repair of the American dream to the younger, more naive and energetic citizens. Let them pound sand while I cultivate a nice little garden on my Costa Rican mountain property.

    I have missed you Maravilla……

And I missed you too, but I was very busy turning my house into a smaller version of Carcasonne to abate the wind and rain. Plus life in the campo is anything but dull and boring; in fact, it’s downright exhausting, and I only came back to this place to work on a mural for our Dubai project. Then I’m back to Pura Vida and real concerns about life!

Maravilla could you please add your perspective on crime and safety in Costa Rica based on your last stay. I don’t know what you might say but would be interested on your take of things.

It only takes 50.1% of the population to elect a President, especially if the electorate is in your back pocket. GWB was elected by the religious right/silent majority. I am one that belives a minimum IQ, fluency in the predominant language of the country and the same knowledge of US civics/politics required to be a citizen should be required to be able to vote.

You are assuming that your vote actually makes a difference. It does not, it has been rigged for a long time, your vote means nothing

Democracy in the US is an illusion and anyone who says otherwise is either a politician who knows exactly that or he’s just deluded.

I am far from naive, but surrounded by the naive. I have lived on 3 continents during my lifetime from the extremes of north Africa to the extremes of Alaska and all places between. I have lived an international life, was raised as an “oil brat”, have a foreign mother and speak three languages, which makes my exposre to the world much more diverse than the “average joe” american. It would take a thesis to explain what I believe is wrong with the US, besides the obsession with power, greed and “we know btter than you” attitude. Our government is broken on all levels, right down to the local school districts and their idiotic, lack of common sense policies which trump actual education (3 children).
My list is long, but the list of where I want to live the 2nd half of my life and escape the daily inane insanity is between Panama & Nicaragua, while my current country still alows me to do so.
