After checking out a home in Jaco Beach, we headed up to Lake Arenal for a few days. Just to visit. Just to look at the lake. Just to enjoy the weather. Ok, ok, we bought a house. Not really spur of the moment as we had been researching for 3 years, but unexpected. After all, we flew down to look at beach area property. But we fell in love. Now we have new friends, a great place to dine (Gingerbread House) with an amazing chef (Ayel), and property with a lovely main home, caretaker’s home and 11 acres. Ahhhhhhhhhh

The weather, the idea that tourists “pass through” and in small numbers, the amount of land we could have (they aren’t making new land – except in Iceland and Hawaii), the weather, the friendly x-pats we met constantly, the weather, that beautiful lake and the hills around it, the view from our new patio, the $40 a month in electric (!!!), the river and stream on the property, did I mention the weather?
That’s great. Sounds like you will do well and enjoy a peaceful, rewarding life. Please keep us updated.

Congratulations! Where on Lake Arenal? It sounds likes it’s in the Nuevo Arenal area. We’re actually in the process of buying land outside of NA in Aguacate with lake/volcano views and a short skip down the hill to a boat launch. We, too, have been going down there for some years and have traveled up and down the Pacific coast. While I love all of CR, there was something so special, magical and serene about that Lake–and wherever you drive around, it has a totally different look. Will you be living there year round or part time? I would love to hear the details. If I may ask, did you use a realtor there? Which company and were you happy with them?
Since we’re on the subject of Arenal and surrounding areas, any comments at all as to the availability of medical care in the area? I know there are probably Clinicas with general practitioners and seems like the area in general is very popular with retirees so wondering whether there is much in the way of specialists (cardiology…gastroenterology…internist…etc.) in the region or whether one has to be prepared to travel to SJ for those types of visits. Is there is hospital in the area? Thx.
i think mr Grumblesfromarenal talks about the lack of anything other than basic medical services as one of the reasons he is moving back to the States. He was living in Aguacate and complained bitterly about the lack of everything there, including fresh fruits and vegetables. you can go to his blog and see what he was complaining about.
Our friend there told us that residents in the Aguacate area ‘donated funds’, so there would be at least a defibrillator in the area. If I remember correctly, I was told, that the clinic in the near vicinity only operates for one day a week so one has to be prepared to travel.

He used to be a member of this site but we cut him off – and he was banned from a few Forums – because to be blunt he was a miserable, incredibly rude and argumentative SOB.
I am not at all surprised he didn’t last and, I fully expect him to blame everything on Costa Rica…

i agree. but i knew 7 years ago when he first showed up on the boards that he would never last here. he was just too dogmatic, controlling, and nasty to ever fit in a society that hates confrontation or aggressiveness, and thrives on inefficiency and bureaucrazy. but i thought he’d last longer than 2 years after 10 years of research!
Was he like that “one guy”, a nurse of some kind, who declared himself the protector of the realm and unabashedly tried to run anyone off that was even half-way interested in taking the plunge?
….I sure miss that guy.
that’s him. he’s still pontificating on another board so if you want a dose of abuse, you could go over there and listen to him straighten people out on their misconceptions about Monsanto, Costa Rica, GMOs, how to do this or that. . . or not. why should you be deprived of that experience? plunge right in. jejeje
