We had heard something similiar and checked with the attorneys at ARCR. They said there is no remewing of passport/visa stamps for an extension in Costa Rica. We were told, you must leave the country every 90 days for 72 hours, and that there are no exceptions. I think some people assume you can get extensions because they are offered in many of the surrounding countries. Panama you can get a 3 month extension before having to leave I believe.
So, they’ll give your vehicle an extention, but not you. On the other hand, I know tons of people who overstayed their visa, and then simply paid a small fine upon leaving. That’s old information though, and perhaps they’ve changed this.
If you have any aspirations to applying for legal residency in Costa Rica, I wouldn’t run afoul of the tourist visa restrictions. Why give Immigration a reason to delay or deny your residency application. I can tell you that they will inspect your passport for visa stamps.
I AGREE WITH DAVID! AFTER SO MUCH EFFORT BEING PUT INTO MAKING COSTA RICA MY HOME – I SURELY DON’T WANT TO DO SOMETHING TO JEOPARDIZE MY GETTING RESIDENCY. THANKS DAVID!!!!
