I just received my legalized documents from the Consulado de Costa Rica from Berlin (I´m a German citizen) and hope to get my full residence papers about September. (I´ve lived in Costa Rica before in the glorious ´60s).
I might have found an apartment in Sabanilla. Does anyone know this town? Is it pretty? Is it flat there or hilly? How about buses to San José? How long does the trip take? Any info would be welcome.
Thanks, Erika Castro
I believe Sabanilla is on the east side of San Jose and like everywhere else has changed dramatically since the “glorious ’60s’.
The bus service into SJO is superb, quick, and very affordable but I would strongly caution anyone in renting or buying somewhere without seeing it first….

ECASTRO,
We moved to Costa Rica in December of 2007 and live above Sabanilla. We drive through the area daily. As mentioned, bus service is great. You have a Mas X Menos grocery store several bank branches, pharmacies, minor emergency clinic, hardware stores, etc. Within 10-15 minutes drive or ride, you have malls, restaurants, a HyperMas (Walmart), Office Depot, etc. The east side of town is a little slower moving and has a slightly cooler climate than on the west side. We are very happy living on the East side. As Scott mentioned, if at all possible, you should come here and see it for yourself before renting or buying. If it would be helpful, you may contact me off the list (jdtj777@yahoo.com), give me more info on what you are doing, and exactly where the apartment is and I will drive by and look at it for you.

Dear Scott,
thank you so very much for answering. I know that Sabanilla is close to UCR but know really nothing of the town as such. OTTFOG was nice enough to offer to look at the place and let me know. I immediately felt better – like I was back in America, where I lived for 40 years and the people were nice.
God, I can´t wait to leave Germany behind and its negative, unfriendly people. I must have been born a Latina at heart. Thanks for your help. This website is absolutely great.
Saludos, Erika
