I am looking for a reliable 4×4 to buy. We live in Puriscal and would like to purchase a 4×4. Hopefully with a manual transmission. Paint ect. does not matter much. Engine, brakes, all equipment that makes the vehicle run safely do. Please let me know of anyone willing to sell or if anyone knows of a person whom they can honestly recommend. Thanks!!!
If you are buying a used vehicle in Costa Rica, I would suggest that you deal with a dealership such ar Purdy Motors for Toyota vehicles, or Agencia Datsun for Nissan vehicles, where you will receive a limited time warranty for repairs. The only exception to this rule, would be if you are buying a one owner vehicle privately from a foreigner (American or Canadian), who can document the maintenance history to have been carried-out according to provisions of the Owner’s Manual. Ticos are notorious for not maintaining their vehicles and you are likely to wind-up with a “lemon” if you buy from one.
Regular maintenance of vehicles is even more crucial in Costa Rica than elsewhere, where the state of the roads and poor quality of gas and diesel products tends to “take its toll”.
Just to expand a little on watchdog’s comment above, I would suggest also that you consider looking at Kia and Hyundai. These brands have come way up in quality in recent years and the Hyundais, at least, are much less expensive than the Toyotas and Nissans either of which would have been my first choice.
My local mechanic advises that Toyota and Isuzu are considered to have the most reliable diesel engines, but our Hyundai diesel Terracan has turned over 85,000km with nary a problem.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with me. I decided to import as SUV’s are really cheap in the US right now and I can put a few more things in the container. You know, things that plug in.:o
