I am working on a Mangrove Reforestation Project on the Central Pacific near the town of Parrita. I need to know the month(s) of the year when the red mangrove drop their seeds/propagules. These are the long cigar shaped sprouting seeds that wash up on the beach and estuary shorelines. The other variety we are most interested in has seeds shaped like giant dark brown lima beans that open up like butterfly wings.
I am embarrassed that I don’t already know the answer to this since I have been to this location over 25 times, but I just never made a note of when these mangroves drop their seeds. If anyone knows the answer please post – I would also appreciate any help making contact with knowledgeable wetland biologists, botanists, ecologists, foresters or others who are knowledgeable about mangrove ecosystems.
Thanks,
Robert
Do you have the scientific name for the trees you need information on?
Yes; see the list below. There may be other species we should consider.
Rhizopora mangle (Red)
Avicennia germinans (Black) (I think it is called pineapple mangrove on mangrove tours in CR)
Laguncularia racemosa (White)
thanks,
Robert
