I am coming back “in country” in about ten days. I am communicating with Mapache Rental Cars and they have been very responsive. Has anyone had experience with this company? They are asking for a faxed reservation form that will include my credit card (a copy front and back) and a copy of my passport. This seems unusual….should I be concerned?
April 21, 2009 at 3:22 pm #196007ImxploringParticipantI’ve used them a number of times. All with great results. This is their normal reservation method. They’ll have all the paperwork ready when you get to the airport. Are you flying into Liberia or SJO?
I’ve also booked them through CentralAmerica.com and they used the same system. The big difference was that when I did it this way they charged my credit card before I even arrived and issued me an e-mail voucher to present to Mapache when I arrived. I now go directly through the company.
If you’re flying into SJO I’ll contact my man at Mapache and have him deal with you directly. He’s Aces!!!

April 22, 2009 at 12:53 pm #196009sueandchrisMemberThanks guys! I will reserve today. Actually, I am arriving too late to get the car at their office, so they are bringing it to the hotel the next morning! I am communicating with Javier and he has really been great! Also, they have given me full disclosure about fees, which is really nice. I also like that my week-long rental will get me a “free” cellphone, although the minutes are really expensive. Still, nice to have it in case of emergency. I also added the $6.00/week coverage for tow-truck service.
Can’t WAIT to get back!
April 22, 2009 at 12:58 pm #196010BIGWOODMemberYou can go online and use Dollar or Hertz and they will pick u up at the airport and do an online reservation that requires nothing other than a flight #. They are much cheaper than Mapache. I would not fax my credit card there or passport. I have had a home there for 5yrs. and never had to do what is expected of you
April 22, 2009 at 1:35 pm #196011ImxploringParticipantMy buddy used Dollar two trips ago thinking he was saving a few dollars and got hit with additional fees and insurance when he arrived. When he told them he was using his AMEX card and had a special rental insurance wavier program they declined to honor the rental rate he was originally quoted. They told him that to get the “special” rental rate quoted he HAD to take the additional insurance. After all that when he got back from the trip they had tried passing another charge for $85 dollars through via his AMEX. He disputed it and they dropped it when they were unable to provide a reason for the additional charges. He was NOT a happy camper.
I just jumped on the Hertz site and can’t see that they’re any less expensive, however I’ve never used them or had an experience with them.
April 22, 2009 at 11:53 pm #196012mr.diMemberHello all,
We have always flown in to Liberia and used Toyota rentals on our last 6 trips–always prompt pick-up and drop-off at airport and car ready to go at their off-site office(apprx 500yrds from airport). staff speaks english and prices are fair for new to one-year-old toyota vehicles –to date all well maintained and nearly new vehicles, (including Daihatzus Bego –smaller but cheaper than a RAV4). Staff even helps load your vehicle and will allow drop-off at airport on departure at no extra charge. we are offered 15% off (10 for returning customer and 5 for reserve through email/on line) all they required to date was our flight number. I have just received my quote/confirmation for our summer trip.
hope this helps.
joeApril 23, 2009 at 4:32 pm #196013rcpoppellMemberI used Mapache repeatedly until they screwed me. Their guy charged my Visa $3250 for $336 bill. By the time Visa straightened it out they had $60 in :fees: they refused to refund.
I will never go back to them.April 26, 2009 at 9:33 pm #196014delucajmjMemberHi Joe.
Can you give me the web site for the Toyota rentals? We’ll be down there for 5 weeks this summer and haven’t decided on which company to work with yet.
Thanks, TerriApril 26, 2009 at 9:47 pm #196015mr.diMemberHi terri,
