Ok so I am not familiar with forums so am hoping I follow the proper protocols. I am not seeking legal advice, per say, more suggestions and peoples experience. I was married in Costa Rica. I am Canadian and He is Costa Rican. I have been back in Canada for many years and myself and him have been separated for 4.5 years. I want to get a divorce. Do I need to get a divorce in Costa Rica? If so does anyone know the name of a lawyer who is reputable. I do not wish to pay for a divorce and find out later I am still legally married. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Shannon
This is just a guess but I would have to assume you can get divorced any where you want to.
Hi, my wife and I got married in Costa Rica a couple of years ago. We are American citizens but wanted to be married in C.R. Our attorney told us for the marriage to be accepted in America, we would have to register it with the proper agencies. Otherwise, it is not “quite” legal. Bottom line is, you ARE married. In Costa Rica and if Canada if you registered it there. If not, you are not “married” in Canada. Bottom line is that you HAVE to see a good attorney in Canada to make sure all problems and questions are answered.
