Credit unions pay up to 4.25% more than banks on term deposits in local currency.

“Coopealianza, Coopeservidores and Coopenae offered rates of 10.00%, 10.75% and 9.75% respectively for six-month deposits in *colones.*

For *dollars*, credit unions offer rates up to 12.75%, while the financial sector offers up to 4.28% for dollar certificates for the same term rates.

The lowest rates for savings in colones are offered by private banks such as Bancrédito, Scotiabank and BAC San José.

Can anyone flesh out the matter of credit unions, please?

    Who can join?

    What services do they offer?

    Is there a list online?

    Thanks!

Sadly, these websites are all written in a language I speak only on a pidgin level, so that’s not much help. None of them lists all the credit unions in existence, so there’s no way of knowing if there’s one anywhere near me. And one of them says you must be younger than 55 to join which lets me out.

    Oh well . . .

Coopenae has a lot of my friends as depositors and not a one of them is a day younger than 60! they are offering 11% in colones, but what is the net yield is what i want to know, with the fluctuation, etc. and they were offering 2.2% on dollar accounts — i have a meeting next week with the guy who runs the Coopenae office in San Ramon. He speaks perfect english, but your results may vary.

The Spanish article refers to various dollar accounts…

In the article, the highest rates of interest for a six (6) month US$ term deposit on offer are:

    Desyfin – 4%
    Comeca – 4.28%
    Multivalores – 4.07%
    G&T – 4.25%
    Bansol – 3.75%
    Cathay – 3.25%
