finally sold our house in u.s. and want to move to costa rica I wanted to know if motor homes were allowed in c.r. we need a place to live while looking for a place to buy
It is certainly legal to own and operate a motor home in Costa Rica, but I wonder if it’s a good idea. First, there will be the expense and hassle of getting it here whether you ship it or drive it down. Then, it must pass the technical inspections, etc to become legal to license and register here. Given the rarity of motor homes here, I wonder how many the inspectors see and what problems will have to be overcome with them.
And once here, it’ll be a pain to drive on our narrow roads. It’ll be expensive to operate with our high fuel prices. And it will be problematical to find a place to park it. I’m unaware of any campgrounds that have the hookups you’d need. There may be some but they certainly aren’t common.
And finally, it’s something that would probably be nearly impossible to sell once you’ve found a permanent home. With a population of four million people, most of whom work for the minimum wage, the demand for a high-end luxury item like a motor home has got to be miniscule.
I agree with everything David said, but I also wanted to add that I’ve know of people that drive into CR. They come in as tourists with their vehicle and just have to leave the country within their assigned visitor’s time. You should check with the Costa Rican Consulate in the US (usually one nearby and if not you can call the nearest one or the D.C. one). Best of luck!
