My dios! These people are crazy!! Just yesterday I saw three accidents with motorcycles lying under cars and police on scene. Everyday these people I see driving in the wrong lane, trying to make sometimes high speed illegal and dangerous passes cutting myself and other people off, driving in the drains on the grass, cutting infront of cars literally and constantly putting themselves and other drivers in mortal danger. It seems to be getting worse!. Then when you dont let one of the wannabe evil knievels cut in front of you they have the nerve to flip you the finger or even better one even tried to smack my side view mirror. It amazes me that these people who drive these things dont have one bit of regard for their own life and im not even mentioning mine!
Yes I know the police dont care or do anything as everyone tells me but it would be great if they cracked down on these people instead of just standing on the sidelines with their laser guns for easy tickets.
Maybe somebody who cares will read this.
sofloSeptember 1, 2007 at 1:12 pm #186449AndrewKeymasterThe sale of scooters and small motorcycles has increased dramatically with the increase in gas prices, unfortunately on these roads, I would not encourage someone to use a scooter.
Potholes, passion and plain stupidity will take their toll…

I’m afraid, however, that it will take a cultural change that ain’t gonna happen in this lifetime or the next to make any difference. In the meantime, all we can do is shake our collective head, cluck, and drive very defensively.

Here in the US if you get caught in the rain you pull under an overpass or just stop on the side of the road until it passes. In Costa Rica you just stop long enough to get out the poncho, then its full steam ahead!

sofloSeptember 1, 2007 at 4:16 pm #186454AndrewKeymasterDon’t look at this as a ‘problem’, look at this as an ‘opportunity!’
We could hire all the Hollywoood stunt drivers we wanted simply by running an advertisement in La Nacion for “Drivers Wanted for Hollywoood film – Taxi drivers preferred.”
We pay them the usual $500 per month plus travel and accommodation and charge the studio the usual $5,000 per day per driver…

I don’t care how much gas costs, I am getting a Toyota FJ Cruiser so I can watch the mopeds and motorcyles bounce off of my SUV and into the culverts where they can no longer threaten other lives.
Ticos are lovely people but are also a bit immature relative to other cultures. It appears many of them drive like drunk teenagers with tempers.September 2, 2007 at 9:21 pm #186456soflodougMemberInteresting I never thought in the perspective of immaturity however now that i think about it, it is overwhelming. They are like naughty kids who were never punished for anything. I might add in price smart and epa some of their driving a shopping cart talents need to be refined also. Just today a person bumped into my bag i was carrying with his cart,he definately could have avoided me but anyway i looked at him and he spewed some sort of sorry or something and i said “are you stupid? and he just kept pushing his menacing cart.
