The more i think about this idea, the more i think it won’t work. there just aren’t enclosed venues to do this, outdoor venues are limited to the big parks, etc., but most importantly, i don’t think there are enough expats to support this venture. i would get in touch with the concert promoters are ARE booking acts from the States. i’ve been here 5 years and with the exception of that club in grecia that has local expats playing music, there just aren’t that many places, and even when there is some kind of jazz or rock get together, people show up, but not in numbers that would support a big expensive act. if 50 people show up for the jazz concert at a local resort, that’s a lot. as for nighttime gigs, the number one rule in Costa Rica is don’t drive at night. i don’t know anyone who goes out at night. it’s a whole different life down here for expats. many of us hail from big cities where we did all the clubbing we need to do. so your audience isn’t likely to be comprised of old farts on social security. as for the developers who are promising to build a venue, well, i wouldn’t hold my breath. if i had to ask someone who had a real clue, it would be Evan Luck at RadioDos.

March 19, 2010 at 5:15 pm #164983GreciaBoundMemberI would say stick with it BoaterBob. The example of Craig Chaquico playing recently in Nosara at fundraiser could be a model that works. I believe there are many folks here who would venture out to an afternoon event, doesnt have to and probably wont attract many retirees. Promoting it on Jazz Radio 95.5 is another good idea. The idea of 500 or 750 person events, no matter who the band is, may be interesting but not sustainable, even if a developer built a new place, in my opinion.
March 19, 2010 at 6:34 pm #164984DavidCMurrayParticipantSeems to me that a further obstacle to attracting expats is that, with the exception of Escazu and maybe Santa Ana (essentially one community), we/they appear to be spread out rather thinly. That is, while there certainly are expats in Grecia, in San Ramon, etc, those locations are far enough apart that any event held in one probably won’t get much support from residents of the others.
I’m a huge fan of Craig Chauuico, but I wouldn’t even consider traveling to Nosara to hear him at any time of the day or evening.

The Canadian Club hosts many functions throughout the year and they all start at lunch time and is over by 5pm. with the exception of the co-hosted Christmas Dinner & Dance, where we all fun but complain at the cost 🙄March 20, 2010 at 1:36 pm #164986claytonMemberThe Central Valley to Nosara would not be your typical night out on the town that’s for sure. Or is it our lovely roads that would keep you away.
