We are seriously considering relocating to CR with our kids (ages 12 & 15) next January. They both play the guitar and my son plays the fiddle and classical violin and I take banjo lessons (I’m Mom). Is there CR “bluegrass”? Is there CR classical violin? What about guitar? Is it all flamingo style? Are there locals who teach privately or do they have music schools around?
Thanks,
Terri
With expats from so many nations, I am sure you can find a teacher for any music genre. However, Costa Rica in general is not as openly passionate about “latin” music as you would find in Cuba, Puerto Rico or Brazil. Flamenco as the norm is pretty limited to Spain and Argentina. You will find more Salsa in Central America. There is good Jazz in San Jose and plenty of classical.
I do not live in CR but have visited about a dozen times. My husband plays the banjo and most Costa Ricans we have met (mainly in rural areas) have no idea what a banjo is. I doubt you would find any bluegrass unless you found some expats with an interest…
