Does anyone know whether there is any progress?
The target date was 2010.July 23, 2008 at 12:33 pm #191705AndrewKeymasterPlease see ‘Costa Rica’s New Airport to be Built in Palmar Sur – Budget for technical study only confirmed.’ at [ https://www.welovecostarica.com/members/1530.cfm ]
As far as I know there has been NO progress of any kind. I have been told by a local expert that because of frequent flooding the existing site is not a good one, I have also been told that because of the location near the new damn that the electromagnetic energy from that dam would play havoc with the navigational systems of planes and the new airport ‘if’ it ever gets built.
We may eventually have a small local airport here but Costa Rica can’t seem to find the money to maintain their two, very busy existing international airports, I honestly do not believe we’ll see an additional “international airport” in Palmar Sur – where there is very little demand – for another 25+ years.

August 12, 2008 at 4:16 pm #191707dehaaijMemberThere’s mention of it in today’s edition of AMCostaRica.com. Costa Rica has been granted a $1 billion loan from the Inter-American Development Bank and it just needs to be approved by the Asamblea Legislativa. The plans are for the money to be spent on new higways, existing roads, bridges and airports.
Here’s a quote, “The loan is also meant to help airports. Ms. González said that would mainly go to the new international airport in the southern region near Palmar since the airport in Libería already is receiving funds from other sources.”

August 12, 2008 at 6:56 pm #191708AndrewKeymasterJust for the record – I can NOT see any quote anywhere in the Spanish press where Karla Gonzalez says anything about a “new international airport.”
La Nacion does refer to thefact that would help build the “airport in the southern zone” but says nothing about a “new international airport.”
In costs there is an ENORMOUS difference between a small domestic airport and a “new international airport.”

No other countries in Latin America have been granted a loan this large from the bank’s in it’s 50 year history apart from Argentina and Brazil.

August 13, 2008 at 2:28 pm #191711pweisel1MemberLets remember the good news: There *already* is a small domestic airport in Palmar Sur!
Ok, it’s more of an airstrip, but with 3+ daily flights to and from San Jose, I use it when ever I’m headed to the Southern Zone.
August 13, 2008 at 4:41 pm #191712dehaaijMemberPart of the problem with the inefficiency is that the government hasn’t had the money. Without money, it’s hard to plan things into the future. If this loan gets approval, the article says it will allow planning for the next 20 years.
I’ve been coming/living in Costa Rica for 20 years, well before there was any talk of a new international airport in Liberia, which has now been operating as a success for a number of years now. I really don’t understand the differences between the success of the second large international airport and the impossibilities conveyed here of a third.
