“The senators will call Saverin’s move an “outrage” and will outline their plan to re-impose taxes on expatriates like Saverin even after they flee the United States and take up residence in a foreign country. Their proposal would also impose a mandatory 30 percent tax on the capital gains of anybody who renounces their U.S. citizenship.”
May 17, 2012 at 3:11 pm #165692AndrewKeymaster“Eduardo Saverin was born in São Paulo, Brazil, to a wealthy Jewish Brazilian family, and was raised in Miami, Florida. Eduardo’s father was a Brazilian industrialist working in export, clothing, shipping, and real estate…. Saverin has lived in Singapore since 2009.”
Instead of governments waking up to the fact that they need to provide services and incentives to keep their citizens happy, to attract billionaires and investments to their shores – like Singapore where there is very low income tax and no capital gains or inheritance taxes – the U.S. wants to create laws to scare the crap out of them?
Brilliant move which is guaranteed to backfire!
We should also remember that people like Saverin can obviously afford to hire the best estate planning attorneys in the world, they can create tax advantaged multi-jurisdictional trusts and foundations and offshore insurance companies to protect their assets, as always it will be the regular guy who will suffer the consequences…

Phil Hodgen, an international tax lawyer in Pasadena, Calif., said that in the last three years, new and old rules had created an enormous amount of resentment — and paperwork expenses — for expatriates.

So happy that you made sure to point out to all your readers that Mr. Saverin is Jewish!!! Does his religion make a difference to the story? Obviously it does to you Scott.
May 17, 2012 at 4:05 pm #165694AndrewKeymasterIt makes no difference to me whatsoever “gkbiz,” I was merely stressing the fact that since Mr. Saverin was born outside of the U.S, and he has been living in Singapore since 2009, he is very much an “international” man and not just someone who’s made a ton of money and now wants to flee the U.S.
If you don’t like the fact that Wikipedia mentions that he is Jewish, please do feel free to waste your time emailing them your comments.

May 17, 2012 at 10:38 pm #165696spriteMemberI also feel a deep sadness for my 18 year old son and his generation. College grads have made themselves debt slaves for life to obtain degrees in worthlessness. They go into a world filled up with hopes made false by a collapsing economy and a thoroughly destructive and corrupted government. This latest tax thing is another tightening of the noose.
May 18, 2012 at 2:14 pm #165697AndrewKeymaster“You might think Schumer, Casey, and their peers would instead of vilifying Saverin, thank him—and Facebook—for spawning an entire industry and creating tens of thousands of U.S. jobs. Not to mention paying hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes, and making it much simpler for the NSA and CIA to assemble dossiers on anyone they decide to watch who’s on Facebook.”
May 18, 2012 at 2:32 pm #165698rturnerMemberNothing is ever enough for guys like that…

Scott is out in LEFT field but that does not happen this time
there is more than what Scott posted and it is way “MORE”
read between the lines on what he he wrote
FACEBOOK is all over the world and impacts all economies regardless of income, language or borders
Consider a LETTER sent from the USA to Australia and it will be there in 4-5 days
Facebook is instant compared to the USPS
IF!!! there is any argument, consider compAnies like Vonage, SKYPE and the internet

Knowing a person’s heritage and background does tell you a lot about a person – and knowing that he is Jewish – tells me a lot about him. Reading your comment also tells me a lot about you gkbiz. One is that you are American most likely and caught up in the PC trap that is going on in the USA. David
May 20, 2012 at 10:42 am #165702spriteMemberPC trap? Are we still talking about taxes? I am terrible at abbreviations.
May 20, 2012 at 12:56 pm #165703maravillaMemberPC = politically correct

David, please tell us in detail just what you can discern from the fact that Eduardo Saverin (whom I suspect you have neither met nor researched in any depth) is Jewish and was born in Brazil. And please specify which of your insights arises from the fact that he is Jewish and those that arise from the fact that he was born in Brazil.
Because Eduardo Saverin is Jewish, David can tell that . . .

May 20, 2012 at 3:27 pm #165705rfmarkMemberIt is to bad these have to end up being about an issue other than the real issue. The government taking action again him regardless of where he was born or what religion he is would be the real issue… This type of government attack on sucessful people is the issue. The U.S. need to stop an over reaching oppressive government.
