The latest new product rolling through the doors of INTEL in Belen, is the world’s first microprocessor using 45nm technology.
The transistors on the new chips are so small that more than 30 million fit onto the head of a pin.
Additionally, these are the first lead-free (greener technology) chips from Intel and they are about 30% more energy efficient.
The Costa Rican plant was key to the design of the new chips.
There was a team of 57 design engineers that worked on the Penryn chip here in Costa Rica, where the new chips received they’re final testing and were assembled for worldwide shipment.
Intel employs about 4,500 workers in and around Belen. The company opened its facility here in 1996, and about 30% of the country’s exports by value can be linked to the Intel plant.
