An updated post from the first poster:
”OK – the Costa Rican Consulate in NYC called back and told my fiance that there has not been a change in the law and there are no additional charges.

So I called Continental’s Safe Pet department and this is what they told me:

There is now a 24.24% import tax calculated on:
* The value of the animal (minimum of $50) plus
* Insurance (minimum of $10) plus
* Total shipping charge

There are also the following charges:
* $60 – import permit
* $30 – import fee

and if the animal is not accompanied there is a $90 charge to pick up at the warehouse or a $100 to pick up at the terminal.

The woman said they got this information from Continental’s management and that the only contact information is the Dept of Agriculture in Costa Rica. She was reading from the communication memo and said that a broker was also required.

Let’s hope the consulate is correct.”

Other folk have also reported phone calls regarding this same matter, but only from Continental

The sale of Pedigreed dogs is a big business, and the dogs are often sent ‘unescorted’ so maybe this is why ‘brokers’ were necessary before, are now being made mandatory for any importation any animal coming into Costa Rica.

but do those things apply for pets accompanying us on our flight whether in the cabin or in the cargo hold? i can’t imagine having to pay an import license fee on a service animal. that is just plain nuts

we’re flying in next week with two cats so I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

However, after talking with the CR consulate, Delta and the USDA nobody has heard of these changes. Could be CA is just confused? 😕

Good luck on your new endeavor and keep those cats close! And your son of course…:D

Did you know that JetBlue will accomodate pets in-cabin? I don’t know all the places that JetBlue serves in the states, but I checked on Orlando, and they have a direct flight to CR and will take dogs and cats. I don’t know anything about the CR end of the deal.

does anyone have any news on this supposedly new import license that animals are required to have? a friend of mine just got word from a pet transfer service that they will charge her $1900 from Newark to SJO to get her dog here. as of last week nobody seemed to know if any of this stuff was really happening but apparently it is and the rules and regs are long and complicated — dog sitting in warhouse for a day or two, no water, no food, customs agent only available at such and such times, vet must have passport in hand before doing anything and you have to go to him while dog sits who knows where? can this be happening???

yep, that’s what the pet transport service wanted to get the dog from Newark to SJO, hire the broker, and whatever blah blah that was needed; of course, my friend doesn’t really need the broker, or the vet at the airport, or anything else, but that’s what the service was charging. i’m surely in the wrong business.

The idiots in the Empire are clueless.
2 years ago I brought in a bulldog. I called the girl at the consulate in Miami and got all of the info, went and got the shots, went to the USDA vet and everything was in order.
The nitwits at SW said i needed something else.I got the girl on the phone and she basically, in Tica :lol:, told the idiot to put the damn dog on the plane and she’d handle it on this end.Off we went.
They brought me my dog, first item off the plane.
I walked into the luggage pickup and a Tico customs guy comes over, I handed him my paperwork,he said que linda perra, and we went on our way.

Shoot PETA an email. They’ll “find out” EXACTLY what the deal is…….and fix the problem, if there is one 😯

we brought in one of our dogs just 6 months ago; no problema, same routine as the other 8 times. someone decided — supposedly at TSA — that there was a new rule, one that nobody else knows about. unless of course the original poster who claims to have been called by Continental was only playing with part of a deck. it doesn’t even make sense that you would need an import license or a broker to bring in a housepet. the more i think about it, the more squirrelly it sounds.
