I think that it is a joke to think that you are safe in Costa Rica. I am born in Costa Rica and now live in the U.S.A. and each year I go back I see how bad it keeps getting and anyone who doesnt think so should learn spanish and read La Nacion.

Bad news SELLS papers! If I based my feelings about how well things were going in ANY town/state/country on what was being reported in the newspaper… I’d be living at the North Pole… they don’t have a daily paper there! LOL

I have been very “safe” living in Costa Rica for nine years ggandtiki2. I have experienced no major problems with crime at all during that time…

Are you saying there’s no crime in the US?

Where do you live in the USA exactly?

I agree with Scott & Imxploring. There may be crime in CR, but there is crime everywhere. One thing that really hasn’t been discussed is terrorism. Its not like al qaeda is plotting to blow up bus stations in San Jose…

There is some truth to ggandtiki. CR is becoming [or has become] more violent.
Ex: just look at the shoot out in the Uruca a couple days ago, where 2 men on motorcycles car-jacked an business owner for the “aguinaldo” he was to give to his employees. He [the victim]jumped out of his car and began shooting at the criminal and to top it off a passer-by messenger joined him in the shootout against the assailants.

Law enforcement is understaffed, outgunned, under funded and sometimes corrupt (starting in w/ their own CR version of FBI) [sounds familiar? alike US].

5yrs ago this type of violence was unheard of [perhaps in domestic dispute, where the spouse end up murder, welcome to a crime of passionate Latin Ame.] But why has CR become a gun wielding, pseudo “wild-wild west”. Is it B/C criminal have more right then victims. [ie lack of Miranda like-rights where criminal cant be interrogated].
Civility has to return to CR. but until criminals [violent and non] aren’t looked at as Public-Enemy #1!! The Tranquilo mentality will prevail and justice will suffer. Just like every Big City from US thru Central and South America.
San Jose will be no different.

In the 8 years I’ve been here, I’ve witnessed crime first hand. Every single one of my employees have been a victim of crime over the past couple of years. Just yesterday, the mother and sister of one of my employees was held up at gunpoint just as they walked outside their house in San Pedro. My wife’s doctor and her family were held hostage inside their house by gun toting bandits earlier this year.

I’m not selling real estate, nor security products. But I think people need to have a valid concern for their safety when either they come to visit CR or to live in CR.

The criminal here is becoming more organized and more brazen. The police are struggling. Witnesses get threatened or worse. Drugs are more in the open, and those addicted tend to steal anything they can get their hands on.

You can compare CR to other places and say its worse elsewhere. The problem is the helplessness and frustration even if the criminal were actually caught. The shootout in La Uruca was dramatic. Maybe that will send a message to some criminals. Unfortunately, the shooters have been threatened by the family of the deceased career criminals — instead they should be protected and heralded as heroes.

I agree with Scott and group. I would be much less hesitant to go into the worst parts of San Jose than the worst parts of any major city over 1 million people in the U.S. Physical appearances are always deceiving.
I live in a Snohomish County, Washington (Everett, N of Seattle) rural suburb with lots of land and forests. It looks pristine and feels safe, however, last week we had 3 home invasions within 5 miles and 2 crack-house busts.

I agree with ggandtiki2 that the crime situation in CR is getting out of hand and would like to offer as suggested the first spanish lesson “mal de muchos consuelo de tontos” Need more be said!!!
