We’re planning a trip to CFR for a couple of weeks, the end of June/July. Our kids 19 and 14 would like to fly back home before us. We typically take the Lax/SJO flight that stops in San Salvador for an hour. What are the regulations for kids flying without their parents internationally, does anyone have any experience with this? Would it be safe for the two of them to fly back without us?? Thanks for any help you can give us…
I started flying alone at age 7 from Scotland to West Africa – In those days it was a 25-28 hour trip with 4/5 stopovers and I loved it ….
When my two teenagers were younger (under 18) they also flew as “unaccompanied minors” to visit with me in a number of countries (including Cost Rica) and the airlines – for obvious reasons – are VERY careful in looking out for them…
As “unaccompanied minors” your children will be accompanied in the airport at all times and up the plane door handed over to the flight staff and upon landing, someone will meet them, at the airplane door to guide them through immigration and customs and will ONLY release them to the ONE person that you authorize to pick them up….
Apology – For some inexplicable reason I failed to notice the ages in your posting …. The 19 year old would be considered an adult and the guardian of the 14 year old. The 14 year old would not therefore be considered an “unaccompanied minor.”

Great, I was concerned about possible problems with the layover. Both kids speak some Spanish, but conflicts with authorities, in a second language, isn’t something I’d want them to have to deal with. We’ll send a notarized latter with them just in case…
Thanks
