as sad as it is that Ticos are lagging behind in education, despite their claims of a high literacy rate, let’s not forget that the US lags behind most industrialized nations when it comes to math and science. a few years ago Albania outranked the US in nearly all categories. i’ve seen supposed educated people come to these boards and ask about the island of costa rica. huh? oh, you mean puerto rico? no, they mean costa rica — so some americans are just as clueless about geography. my neighbor in colorado — who’s well educated and whose family was very political — said to me one day that she’d just had lunch with a business client from spain and how shocked she was to learn that spain was NOT in south america. and these people vote. jejeje

Talking about North Americans not knowing their Geography brings to mind when my sister inlaw asked me “Why is Hawaii so hot and Alaska so cold since they were so close together?”
I said “what?” I then realized that she was referring to the weathermans map that shows Hawaii and Alaska just off the coast of California so that North Americans can see all 50 States in one picture.

I have always carried a mental picture of the book we used when we started learning world geography in the 3rd grade in a 2 room country school in Colorado.

What happened to our educational system? I have always credited my father, not the schools, for teaching me how to think but our youth are being poorly served by the educational system in the States. Kids learn best from teachers who make a class interesting. Is that where we are losing it? I see the same thing happening here.

This gets into a whole other topic that I don’t know whether Scott wants to see initiated on this site.

There is a simple reason for this–Because other countries have a hard time resiting the US sphere of influence.
Because the US forces Switzerlnd to reveal bank accounts of portected holders, or because we are heavily searced in foreign airports because of the US ^War on Terror^
Because cancer causing body scanners are being installed in international airports under the guise of US hostility or because US banks can evicerate economies such as Iceland with Ponzi like ^învestment vehicles^
