I just purchased a lot in a small Tico community in Perez Zeledon. We’ll probably have some green space where I can plant some greenery. I would like to plant an orange tree and maybe gather some of the fruit before I die. How old a tree can I plant and how long would I have to wait until it starts bearing fruit? Or is this just a pipe dream?

You can go to any local nursery (vivero) and get a hybrid which should bear fruit within 1 1/2- 2yrs. Mandarin, avocado are all good bets as well.
Thanks mysticmaiden. If I have enough room, I’ll try those as well. I’m sure the nursery can fill me in about how much room I need or if I need more than one tree to guarantee fruit.
