If you read the label on the margarine, I would bet it’s colored with achiote.

I;ve bought a lot of seeds from Seeds of Change, which has a seed bank. These are mostly heirloom, and definitely not GMO, seeeds. I don’t know if anyone in my area is saving seeds; I’ll have to ask my gardener. But I don’t dare buy anymore until I start using up what I brought down with me and then I can save the seeds from what I grow. There was an article in Mother Earth News not too long ago on the nutritional content of foods grown in the US today and they are sorely lacking in the basic vitamins and minerals. Hardly even worth eating them. I also heard on the new yesterday that there is no way to guarantee safe food products coming from China, and that the FDA has no authority over the foods coming in. When I hear this kind of thing, it really motivates me to grow my own food.

You’re so right Maravilla! It’s amazing that there are so many people suffering from vitamin deficiencies in the US with so much food available to most! As you say, the problem is that the food we’re eating is no longer as nutritious as before for various reasons. To add insult to injury, they then diagnose it as something else & give them a little pill to make it better which only seems to add another health concern which then leads to more little pills as if they have forgotten what Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine wrote: “let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food.” It’s wonderful that you can still grow your own food–I miss going out into my CR gardens and picking the fruit I was going to eat that morning. I hope I will be able to do this again sometime soon. Thanks for inspiring all of us. 🙂
