So we are thinkin’ about taking the drive South from Esterillos Oeste…just below Jaco, down to the Oso Penisula in November. Any tips ? Can we drive our rental sedan, a Nissan , or something like that …a regular sedan…or do we need something with more ground clearance, amd maybe a 4 x….can we drive the coast all the way down…safe…or do we take the inland route ? Any help would be greatly appreciated…

The road is in good condition until you get south of the Quepos airport. It becomes dirt and has some good size pot holes. It is flat, and I see lots of sedans on the road, but you need to take it really slow. You can go a bit faster with a 4X4. All of the mountain roads around there need a 4X4 if you decide to go off the Costanera. It will take you maybe 1.5 hrs. from Quepos to Dominical. The roads south from Dominical are great. The inland route would probably add several hours to your trip. They are supposed to start paving the Costanera any minute now, but nothing so far. Most of the bridges are all new and finished except the Naranjo river.

Just went to Panama from Quepos/MA. Yes road is rough from Quepos to Dominical. But not as bad as before. If you could take a small 4X4 it might be better but not necessary. The scenery past Dominical is nice. Have fun.

    Hi:
What part of Panama did to drive to? I am considering a drive from Esterillos to Panama City and was wondering how long such a trip would take and what I would encounter in route. Thanks
