I’m interested in moving from San Diego, California to Ostional, Nicoya, Costa Rica. I would like to live more in the Costa Rican life style than try to import or recreate a U.S. lifestyle. I am an older surfer/retired English teacher. I know there is a community near there called Pachemama. Does anyone have any knowledge or contacts in that area?

I’ve been there while that was going on and it’s quite a sight to see. We usually spend most of our time a little north of there around Playa Junquillal/Playa Negra. ( Playa Negra is one of the more famous surfing spots in Costa Rica ) The area is pretty laid back although there is quite a bit of developement going on.
I’m also in the San Diego area so let me know if you have any other questions, possibly living in Costa Rica is one of my wife’s favorite topics…..

Nosara is a beautiful place a bit pricey and interesting mix of Europeans (great restaurants), Ticos and surfers. Very good surf but still my favorite break is Playa Hermosa(Jaco).
July 4, 2006 at 12:30 pm #177210moosesurfrMemberHi Paumatom: Last summer I spent 5 weeks or so in Playa Guiones. I made several trips to Ostional when the river was down. I tried to head north to Playa Junquilla but the rivers seemed a little to deep. Have you driven that stretch of coast? My wife and I bought land just north of Ostional. We’re going there again this summer. We hope to retire there in 5 to 7 years. Playa Negro is closer to Tamarindo isn’t it?
July 4, 2006 at 3:07 pm #177211paumatomMemberHi Moose- I’ve driven the coast road from Paraiso to Montezuma on the tip of the Nicoya. We did that trip during the dry season ( Dec.), don’t think I would try it during the rainy season there are too many rivers (8 or 9). There’s even one spot where you have to drive up stream for a 100 yds. or so to pick up the road. It is a great trip with some stunning scenery along the way.
One of our trips was during September and that is when we saw the turtles. Roads and rivers are quite different during the rainy season. That night we took a little shortcut we usually use during the dry season. There’s a small creek which is usually about 10″ deep in Dec./Jan., well that night the headlights on our 4×4 went underwater as soon as we started in and I’m sure if I had been driving there’s not much chance I would have made it through. We were with a Tico friend so we managed to make it, but it was not a smart move on our part. On that later trip when we drove the coast I rented a 4×4 diesel pick-up and although it turned out not to be really necessary it made the trip extremely easy and added a certain amount of security and peace of mind.
We’re looking at the area around Paraiso for possible retirement. It is about 15 miles or so south of Tamarindo.
July 4, 2006 at 8:11 pm #177212*LotusMemberThat is a beautiful drive we went from Nosara (actually had a house in Playa Guiones) to Mal Pais. We also did Nosara to Tamarrindo(not the highway!) , I think it’s called the Congo Trail, wild and we were in a mini suzuki 4×4. This is just a rutted trail over the mountains, the roughfest road I’ve been on in Costa Rica. With a bigger truck it may not have been as difficult.
