My husband and I just returned from our first trip to Costa Rica. While there I had 2 root canals and crowns done at the DentaVac Clinic in Escazu. We rented a car and viewed properties most of the week spending time in San Jose, Escazu, San Isidro, Dominical and Jaco. It was disheartening to see the abandoned real estate developments along the new highway from Dominical up to Jaco and beyond. Empty shells of half built buildings is an eyesore. I’m interested in hearing from other folks on the state of the economy…mainly the tourist industry in Costa Rica.

It is the same going in the other direction up to Playas del Coco, Hermosa, Panama, etc. In Coco, many closed stores, all boarded up.
Too many places vying for too few investors and/or tourists.
I thought it looked awful, when I saw so many billboards being errected near the Liberia airport but now, possibly only 1 in 5 billboards are actually advertising a business, the rest are empty.

Were you happy with your dental work? I need extensive dental and am considering CR for it.

    Thanks,

    Violet

I haven’t been down since March but tourism seemed good but real estate bad. Hopefully it will rebound soon.

Rebounding real estate will depend very much on economic conditions, mostly in Europe and The States. Investment losses in the market have removed some from considering purchases here and others are shaky about the economic future.

March is the tail end of the tourist season so if you were here later than that it would normally be slower. The packaged vacation providers have taken over much of the tourist trade and the smaller B&B operations are slower than they were in the past. A friend with a B&B in San Jose is surviving by word of mouth alone.
