Just as an aside, I was replying to ads for real estate and the response I got for one in Costa Rica actually was for property in Panama. I thought it was interesting as people appear to be pushing there. Oh, it was a lot cheaper and looked beautiful.
August 13, 2006 at 6:49 pm #178001AndrewKeymasterThat’s a very vague statement – “It was a lot cheaper” than what exactly?
How much land exactly? Where was it exactly? Were utilties already in place?
Let’s compare apples to apples shall we?
Please tell us!

Mountain view. Hard wood, recently re-done.

2. 20 miles from Boquete is in the middle of nowhere
3. If you are willing to look at similar areas in Costa Rica for example – 20 miles from Cartago, Liberia or San Isidro, you’ll be able to find hundreds of new homes selling for this sort of price.
4. I personally had a lovely new vacation home built only 40 minutes from Cartago which cost about the same. The grass is not necessarily greener on the other side. Take your time and look around and I think you will find good deals in Costa Rica just as you would in Panama.
My original point though was that we must compare ‘apples to apples.’

WeLoveCostaRica.comAugust 15, 2006 at 3:04 pm #178004costaricajonesMemberIf you compare major city to majore city (San Jose to Panama City) … Panama City wins, hands-down, IMHO. It is cleaner, safer and has more modern infrastructure.
You can verify this yourself by going to the nicer parts of town and seeing that people leave high priced cars — Mercedes and BMW’s– parked in front of their houses without gates closed and without guards out front.
Even in the nicest parts of San Jose, you will never see this.
You will also see upscale, educated women walking their dogs alone at night in high-end commercial areas of Panama City. You will not see this in San Jose.
It all comes down to personal preference. There is no “best city” — it’s just an issue of what’s most important to you.
Personally, I think that if you’re going to live outside of either city, CR probably wins. But I’ve only lived in CR for a little over a year and a half, and I’ve only been to Panama City twice.
The big problem with P.C. is the heat. But I feel the same way about the beaches in CR, too.
August 15, 2006 at 4:32 pm #178005AndrewKeymasterTimes may have changed but a few years ago, one of my writers and I spent months doing research for a substantial crime report and we could NOT find any crime figures published for Panama anywhere so we were unable to draw any relevant comparisons.
As for the weather being too hot in Panama… I think 99% of the people I have spoken to agree with that. The problem with weather is that you have it every day 🙂 – 365 days per year and air conditioning/energy costs are only going to go higher.
Personally, I hate air conditioning and love the fact that the weather where I am in the Central Valley of Costa Rica is the most perfect weather I have ever had the pleasure of living in…

WeLoveCostaRica.comAugust 16, 2006 at 4:13 am #178006jraabeMemberHaving been born and raised in Western Washington where a hot day is anything over 80º, I too love what most people would call spring weather – 60’s and 70’s.
Most of the equatorial world is much hotter and an interesting place for people like me to visit… but not for too long! I would not willingly live where I had to have an air conditioner on to be able to think. Panama city is way too hot – even in February.
So, if Northerners plan to live in places like Costa Rica and Panama, the key to happiness is to be found in elevation. My link to Boquete, Panama is one such ideal place… at about 3200 to 3500 feet elevation no AC and generally no HEAT is needed – also there are fewer bugs and critters. Merely perfect!

This elevation story will be the same in Costa Rica and other tropical places as well.
This is also the elevation I lived at in Hawaii, and except for a few extra cloudy days (no problem for someone from Seattle) it was ideal.

Another issue may be proximity to quality health care.
I’ve read that the specialists spend 1-2 days a week in David (and I can’t remember how far David is from Boquete) …. and the other 4-5 days a week in P.C.
