I”ll help stop the confusion and prevent others from jumping to conclusions. My brother Randy, no relationship to Randy Berg, was signed into my account and signed it with his name. I hope that this is not against the rules. We are looking for investments in real estate in Costa Rica. We have had our answers indirectly answered about Jeff and his company. We believe it is unethical for a person to work in a country without the proper papers, therefore, we will not be using Jeff or the two companies he is associated with. How does an illegal worker pay the 13% tax on commissions? I would also like to point out that no one answered our question about Paradise Profits (First Equity Development) being registered with Sugeval. This may have been because my brother mispelled Sugeval. Jeff did mention on his website that his school investment had “the blessing of the Costa Rican government.” I look forward to hearing more comments from the people involved. Scott I enjoy your forum. However, I would hope that you only recommend legal workers in the future. PK

First, Thank you for making people aware of my Paradise Profits business, as we have not officially launched yet. I appreciate your concerns in regards to Sugeval, but we are an “Education” business, not an investment business. We pay corporate taxes like everyone else who plays by the rules.
I’m sorry that based on your research you feel that we are not qualified to help you with your investments in Costa Rica. Maybe if you read the book you will draw a different conclusion. You will certainly learn a lot in the process.
I offer you my sincere best wishes and the best of luck in regards to your investments in Costa Rica. Whether you seek our advice or not, I believe you made the right decision to invest in this country that we all love. My hope is that you avoid the truly unethical folks out there.
Best,
Jeff Hickcox
January 3, 2009 at 4:15 pm #194227tomtwoshoeMemberJust to add my2 cents about Jeff Hickcox,I have found him to be extemely knowledgeable, easy to work with and honest. He returns my calls which is rare around Costarican realtors, does not represent himself as being an expert, although his knowledge of his area is impressive, and doing business with him is professional and ethical.Thats my experience with Jeff, all positive. You could do alot worse when you look at all tyhe so-called realtors in CR. He is several cuts above the others I have dealt with. Especially in the atenas area where some of the competition really needs a good lesson on professionalism and good service to their clients. He works extremely long hours and always trys to do his best. That my opinion and I’m sticking to it. Thanks for reading my post. Tom
January 3, 2009 at 5:25 pm #194228theoneMemberJeff, thank you for being so upfront about of immigration status. I have one last question for you, do you and your company believe in paying the 13 percent tax on commissions as required by Ley No. 6826 del 8 de noviembre de 1982 y sus reformas. Do you collect on behalf of the real estate company you work for? So many companies I have come across didn’t even know that they are required to collect and pay this tax from their customers. PK

You seem to possess a curious amount knowledge of Costa Rica tax law for a casual person “looking for investments” in Costa Rica. From the beginning of this tread, it seems as though a game of “gotcha” is being played to try to discredit me in some way, as if you are a disgruntled competitor.
Thank you for making me aware of the precise commission tax code. I’m sure our accountant is well aware of it.
I wish you well in the future.
JHJanuary 3, 2009 at 7:56 pm #194230theoneMemberJeff, Investing in a foreign country is not a casual experience for anyone. Your name came to my attention because of promotions for your book and your listing as a recommended “realtor” on Scott’s site. Very basic research on the internet raised questions about investment opportunities promoted on various websites promising varying returns on investment. The current economic crisis makes all investors nervous about who they rely on for investment information. This forum is an excellent way for you to share with potential investors how you are doing business in Costa Rica in an ethical, trustworthy, and legal manner that is different from the business people the public is warned to stay away from. Please feel free to educate investors on what real estate investment opportunities are not required to be registered with the Costa Rican government and how your previous investment experiences have qualified you to advise investors in these situations. People become informed “experts” through the exchange of information available to them. If I was your competitor (I am not), it would be to our mutual benefit to educate and cooperate with each other in promoting professionalism in the real estate industry. This would be of great interest to all investors. pk

January 4, 2009 at 5:18 pm #194232costaverdeMemberTo all of you who have replied and were not born in Costa Rica are all tourists ! There is a legal process to become a resident of Costa Rica. I am sure Jeff Hickcox started this process as soon as he could and is only waiting on the system.
Let’s use this forum for something constructive rather than critising an honest man, like Jeff Hickcox. There are many dis honest people out there trying to scam people. Why don’t you spend your time constructively critiising the scam artisits and expose them ! I don’t think Jeff’s intention was to get rich on selling his book. At less than $ 25.00 and probably won’t make the NY Times bestseller list, he would never be paid back for the countless hours he spent. If you take the time to read it, he is only educating others how to do the real estate business correctly, wisely and lawfully. Dan Downing -
