We are bring a cat and dog into CR via TACA cargo. I have an agent on this end helping me with the paperwork, etc. We are having a difficult time finding a customs agency to clear them in San Jose. One we found wanted $1600, which is ridiculous. It tried to contact the vet on We Love Costa Rica , but they never responded. Does anyone have any contacts with customs agents or other vets that could help us on that end? I would appreciate any input. Thanks so much.
April 4, 2011 at 4:22 pm #160325maravillaMemberwhy aren’t you checking them as baggage? it’s so much easier, and a helluva lot cheaper, too, and no customs broker is involved.

April 4, 2011 at 6:05 pm #160328maravillaMemberi would fly another airline then. i flew my dog down on American for $100. no broker or customs charges at all. dog was on my flight.

How long ago and what breed ?? They just change some pet transport policies.
we were going to fly them w/us on American.April 4, 2011 at 6:16 pm #160330lyncotaParticipantI reread TACA’s pet policy and am now further confused. One place says they fly pets as cargo, not baggage, on regular flights. Another place on the TACAcargo page states that they do not transport pets from North America. I think I would consider American, too! I follow the pet transport threads because we will be bringing our cattle dog when we move in a few years!

The pets will be travelling as cargo on Taca. I have already confirmed with the airline that they can travel. I have also sent the booking request this morning. I will keep you posted if I need your assistance in translating. So far, I am communicating with the customs broker fine.

American and Continental have the best pet transport services, although Continental charges and arm and a leg — they wanted $450 for Blue to go as checked luggage. American was $100. you can guess what i opted for.
my cow dog weighs about 32 pounds. he’s a little guy for the breed, but American was absolutely fantastic.April 5, 2011 at 2:57 am #160333boginoParticipantI guess bringing in an African Grey…a Double Yellow Headed Amazon and a Goffin Cockatoo is out of the question then?
April 5, 2011 at 1:11 pm #160334maravillaMembercheck with the USDA — they know all the importation rules and regs for nearly every country.

It’s my understanding that you can import psittacine birds to Costa Rica, assuming you follow all the rules and procedures, but you can never export them back to the U.S. or elsewhere. If that’s a consideration, be sure to get a definitive answer.
