Where on the web, or does anyone have first hand experience about bring in dogs and what documentation I absolutely need.
ThanksFirst, Costa Rica only recognizes a one-year rabies vaccination. So your first task is to have the dog vaccinated [u]at least thirty days before the travel[/u] date. The thirty day requirement is due to the incubation time of rabies.
Then, ten days before your planned travel, you must have your vet complete an International Heath Certificate which only s/he (not you) may obtain from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Protection Service. Your vet should know about this.
That International Health Certificate must then be endorsed by the USDA’s chief veterinarian in your state. They’re typically located in the state capitol but I’ve heard that they’re also located nearby some major airports. Do a Google search on “USDA Veterinary Service”.
Lately, there has been discussion about other requirements that I’m not aware of, but the foregoing will get you started while you research this further.
My experience is from last summer.
1) International Health Certificate (exam from your vet within 30 days of arrival) (shots need to be more than 30 days)
2) Certification from USDA of Health Certificate. (Local State offices are on USDA webpage. Call for appointment)
3) Shot records. Shots required are on CR Embassy webpage.
You do not need any approval by CR.
Have several copies of everything.
