Does anyone know if and/or when American insurance companies will be able to compete and sell insurance in Costa Rica?
Thanks,
Robin
I think you will find that this is still up in the air….
I have a personal interest in this as I own http://www.CostaRicaLifeInsurance.com as well as http://www.CostaRicaHealthInsurance.com and http://www.CostaRicaMedicalInsurance.com as well as about 100 other domain names…
They are not ‘live’ sites yet but I certainly have plans to activate them when the time is right?
May I ask why you have an interest in this … ?

I am in the process of buying a large apartment on the central Pacific coast ..I double checked with my existing US insurer (which happens to be Travellers Ins. Co. …am sure lots of others are the same), and I am fully covered for theft, loss, damage etc in Costa Rica …no extra $’s to fork out.
I’m sure this would be of great interest to more of our VIP Members, would you please email me (admin@welovecostarica.com) the contact information of Travellers Insurance Co. agent/contact so I could try and get more details?

I am also very interested in information regarding property and casualty insurance specifically for periods while a site is under construction or during remodelling for resale. This is of REAL interest to me as I am making plans for some work there later this year for investment purposes. Also, does anyone have any input regarding earthquake insurance riders for property policies? Is it really high and does it vary according to where the property in Costa Rica is located? Thanks
If you or a contractor will be having workers on your site for construction or remodeling, you will probably need permits. To get construction permits, at least, you will be required to show proof of a paid-up workers’ compensation policy obtained (for the time being, at least) from INS.
Earthquake damage is typically included in regular homeowners’ insurance coverage. I believe the cost varies only with the value of the structure being insured. INS may, however, decline to cover certain structures or parts of them. I know of two cases in which they have excluded from coverage damaged that might be caused by a steep slope that is close to the structure.
