Michelle, if you do NOT have legal residency, you will indeed be leaving the country every 90 days to get your passport stamped. The other option is to stay put and suffer the consequences if there is a migre crackdown on perpetual tourists. What you can earn from your business, is as David said, not part of the equation. That $600 a month must come from either social security, the military, or some other bona fide pension, otherwise you must pony up $60,000 in a bank for yourself, and another $30,000 for your son, if he decides to move with you. As I said in my previous post, you cannot just move to a foreign country and put down roots — there is a labyrinthine bureaucratic process you must go through to live there legally, and it’s all about how much money you have.
To what Maravilla has written, I must add that there are documentary requirements for residency, too. You will need documents issued by the Canadian national or provincial governments, authenticated by them, and authenticated by the Costa Rican consulate including at least the following: birth certificate, marriage and divorce records, custody documents for your son, and a police record report. And you’ll need to prove that guaranteed income source.
All these must be massaged bureaucratically in just the right manner or they won’t pass Immigration’s muster.
You will also need to be preseny in Costa Rica to be fingerprinted for an Interpol record check and to swear before a Costa Rican Notary that you will abide by the law, etc.
You would be well advised to consult a knowledgeable (the operative term) Costa Rican attorney in these matters, one who specializes in residency processing.
No problem Michelle, it was my pleasure to help out–I had to do a lot of asking around in 92 when I was looking for schools for my daughter, I wish I would have had this site for info back then!…I hope you had a wonderful holiday and next year brings you wonderful surprises where you least expect them! Pura Vida!
