Realtor Recommendation?

    Hola, All
    I’m new to the forum (tho not so new to glorious CR) and going to the Caribbean coast next week to meet with friends and hopefully scout for a house (NOT a development) on that coast. (I know I sound like an impulsive loon, but I just found this site. ) Sooooo. . . .
    1.) Does anyone have a forthright, honest realtor to recommend in the Cahuita/PV area? While I hablo a bit of Spanish, bilingual abilities would be especially prized.
    2.) In regards to protocol, is it acceptable to just call a realtor once one has arrived to set up an appointment without going through a whole interrogatory e-mail rigamarole? It’s beginning to dawn on me that one doesn’t just waltz into a Century 21 office to be eagerly greeted by the most recent staff member at the desk awaiting walk-ins, but I’m curious as to how far one has to plan ahead. (I leave Tuesday.) Also, to be honest, I prefer to initiate contact in such business dealings.
    I realize this may seem a churlish post as I haven’t yet bought the book: but a.) even after reading it, I’m sure I’ll still need to get an agent and b.) I’m planning to order it after I return when I’ll be home to get it.

    That’s why we have a Recommended Real Estate Broker section at where I recommend experienced, English speaking real estate agents that I know personally and trust implicitly.

    It would have been useful to have read my book before looking for real estate (or a real estate agent) and on a side note, you’ll be happy to know that you won’t find many ‘developments’ on the Caribbean coast anyway …

    Thanks Scott – I appreciate your reply and will check out the section you suggested. I KNOW it would have been better to have read the book 1st, and would have preferred doing things in the more logical order, but I only just found this forum and already had the trip scheduled. . . . Escaping the insanity of the states, which your own countryman Bill Bryson once characterized as “working really really really really really hard . . . and then going shopping,” is one of the reasons I am intent to get a toehold in a calmer place now.
    When I return I’ll buy the book! (If packages arrive for me when I’m gone, they are often returned because there is no one to intercept them.)

    I’m sure there’s a solid reasoning behind your method, but I must say that I would much prefer seeing a list of names with their qualifications, locations and contact info. It’s just a personal preference. So it goes.

    Well sorry but that’s how this website is designed, nobody is going to be putting a listing of real estate agents here in this forum and if they do, it will be deleted by one of our Moderators

    We’ve tried that before and had a number of very undesirable recommendations and the last thing I want is someone telling me they got ripped off by a broker or developer that was recommended to them by some ‘anonymous’ person in this discussion forum.

    The reason we do it this way is that I value our VIP Members tremendously and also respect the time of our Preferred Real Estate Brokers and when someone is looking for a 2,500 square foot, three bedroom, ocean view home with a gourmet kitchen and an olympic swimming pool for under $100K – I politely tell them that it’s difficult to find within their budget and do not bother the agent.

    If you don’t like it Shefeeney, by all means continue searching for ‘Costa Rica real estate’ in Google and perhaps you’ll find what you are looking for on one of the 2.3 million pages that are out there and one of the thousands of people who call themselves ‘Realtors’ (but aren’t actually allowed to call themselves that) will be thrilled to hear from you.
